MSU Billings showcases female faculty research
Fourth annual Showcasing Scholarship event to be held March 20

MSU BILLINGS NEWS—Montana State University Billings faculty members will present overviews of their current research projects on Wednesday, March 20 from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in Liberal Arts building room 205.
Sponsored by the Women’s Faculty Caucus and supported by the Women’s and Gender Studies Center, the program features women faculty from a wide variety of disciplines who will present their research in 10-minute segments. There will be time for questions and discussion following the presentations, along with a reception.
“This is a great opportunity to celebrate and feature some of the important work that faculty are doing at MSUB and gives both the campus and the community an opportunity to discuss new ideas and projects,” shares Dr. Jennifer Lynn, Associate Professor in the Department of History and Director of the Women’s and Gender Studies Center. The event, she states, also “celebrates Women’s History Month and women’s contributions to the production of knowledge. Moreover, this event is particularly unique because short presentations give the audience an overview of the exciting research that women are doing at MSUB in an accessible way.”
The program features the following scholars and topics. Dr. Emily Arendt, Associate Professor in the Department of History will explore the intersection of politics and fashion in her presentation, “’A Nation of Boobies’: Fashion, Gender, and Political Economy in Early America.” Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre, Dr. Melissa Boehm will share a textual analysis focusing on “The framing of Asheville in the New York Times and the Washington Post.” From the College of Education, Dr. Kari Hale-Duffe, an Assistant Professor of Reading and Literacy,” will present from her recently published work on “Critical Ways of Thinking and Learning: Pre-service Teachers’ Exploration Through Text.” Dr. Patricia Vettel-Becker, Professor in the Department of Art, will discuss her current research, “Where No Woman Has Gone Before: Femininity, Fashion Photography, and the Race for Space.”
“Convening this event is an important function of the Women’s Faculty Caucus. We want to bring the campus community and the Billings community together with these ongoing discussions,” adds Dr. Melissa Boehm, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre. Attendees will receive a program which summarizes the speakers’ topics and biographies, giving the campus community a chance to get to know faculty members.
The event is free and open to the campus and community.
