MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Every handmade quilt shares a common thread: the bits of fabric stitched together tell a story. And as a popular venue for stories, the Montana State University Library has become a renowned venue for faculty, staff and community members to showcase their favorite pieces of quilted work.

In its 10th year, the annual MSUB Library Quilt Show is now welcoming entries for the 2014 exhibit, which is open to anyone who wishes to share their favorite handmade quilt or a family heirloom. All eras and styles of quilts are accepted.

“We like to be a place where the community can gather to share stories,” Dr. Brent Roberts, MSUB library director, said. “It’s great to see the looks of wonder and awe from people of diverse backgrounds that come to observe the amazing quilt talent.”

The exhibit changes and evolves each year, embodying the emerging trends in quilting styles, Kathy Gurney of Library Technical Services said. The show will feature quilts of various traditional and contemporary designs from several different eras.

Even so, it’s not a typical quilt exhibit, Gurney said.

“The quilt show isn’t judged like most, she said. “Rather it’s just a friendly way to share a love and appreciation of quilting.”

A quilter herself, Gurney said she enjoys the warmth and camaraderie the quilt show brings to the library each year.

The quilts will be on display Jan. 15 through Feb. 28 at the university’s four-year campus, 1500 University Drive.

The show is free and open to the public during the regular spring semester library hours: Mondays-Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 10 p.m.
