There are several myths within the LGBTQIA+ community, which can create barriers for those to access advocacy and support. One of those myths is hyper-sexuality, that people who identify as LGBTQIA+, must partake in overt sexual behaviors. This perception can create aggressive nonconsensual acts within the LGBTQIA+ community. It can also make it difficult for survivors to feel supported through their recovery if this behavior is the “norm.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), even though LGBTQIA+ people actually experience sexual violence and harassment at a much higher rate than heterosexuals – they are often far less likely to report it. In fact, 40 percent of gay men, and 47 percent of bisexual men have experienced sexual violence compared to just 21 percent of heterosexual men.
