Army ROTC Scholarships and Benefits Options

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)

The SMP program allows cadets to serve in Army ROTC and the National Guard/Army Reserves simultaneously while in college pursuing the degree of their choice. Benefits include Tuition Assistance, monthly drill pay, a tax free monthly stipend, and potentially student loan repayment, GI Bill, and other bonuses. Upon graduation, the cadet is commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and has the option to serve Active Duty, National Guard, or Army Reserve.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must not reach 31 years of age by the year you will graduate from college (waiverable)
  • Have a minimum High school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Score a minimum of 920 on the SAT and 19 on the ACT.
  • Satisfactory explain any record of arrest and/or civil conviction
  • Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States
  • Must complete the ROTC Basic Course requirements or Basic Training
  • Must be willing to participate in the SMP program with a Guard or Reserve unit. If you do not belong to a unit, you must obtain a letter of acceptance to the unit, stating that they will accept you as a SMP cadet.
  • Must be medically qualified

Military Obligation

If you are selected for the SMP program, you are required to:

  • Accept a Commission to serve on Army active duty, National Guard, or Army Reserves upon degree completion.
  • Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by:
    1. Serving active duty, if selected, for 3 years followed by 5 years of service in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR)/National Guard/Army Reserves. You may elect to serve 8 years or longer on active duty, but only the first 3 are required. Terms of obligation begin at the time of commissioning.
    2. Serve 8 years in the National Guard/Army Reserves, which includes a 3-6 month active duty term for initial training. Terms of obligation begin at time of commissioning.

Guaranteed Reserve Force Duty Scholarship (GRFD)

The GRFD program is designed for cadets who are interested in obtaining a commission in the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard with a guarantee for a reserve component assignment. Scholarships cover full tuition and mandatory fees, and range in length up to 3 years. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance and a monthly stipend. These Cadets also receive weekend drill and annual training pay as participants in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP). Benefits may be recouped if the cadet chooses and is granted conversion to serve on active duty upon commissioning.

If you are selected for a GRFD scholarship, you are required to sign a GRFD contract, guaranteeing service in the National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve upon commissioning.

  • Serve 8 years in a National Guard or Reserve unit that includes 3-6 months active duty for initial training. Terms of obligation begins at time of commissioning.
  • Attend the 5-week Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC): Warrior Forge between the Junior and Senior year.
  • Accept a commission to serve in the National Guard or Reserve upon degree completion.
  • Serve as a SMP cadet in the unit of your choice with an available SMP slot.

Dedicated Army National Guard Scholarship

This scholarship is specific to those students who wish to serve in the National Guard upon commissioning. Dedicated ARNG scholarships cover full tuition and mandatory fees. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance and a monthly stipend. These cadets also receive weekend drill and annual training pay as participants in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP).

2 Year ROTC Scholarships

  • Pays all tuition and fees
  • Provides monthly living allowance
  • Provides Textbook allowance
  • Can be Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty

3 Year ROTC Scholarships

  • Pays all tuition and fees
  • Provides monthly living allowance
  • Provides Textbook allowance
  • Can be Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty

4 Year ROTC Scholarships

  • Available to High School Seniors
  • Pays all tuition and fees
  • Provides monthly living allowance
  • Provides Textbook allowance

Criteria for Scholarships

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be between the ages of 17 and 26
  • Have a high school GPA of at least 2.5
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Score a minimum of 920 on the SAT (math/verbal) or 19 on the ACT (excluding the required writing test scores)
  • Meet physical standards
  • Agree to accept a commission and serve in the Army on Active Duty or in a Reserve Component (Army Reserve or National Guard)

Your Commitment

  • An 8-year service commitment with the Army
  • Serve full time in the Army for 4 years and 4 years with the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR)
  • Selected Cadets may choose to serve part time in the Army Reserve or Army National Guard while pursuing a civilian career
