Graduates earning the Bachelor of Science in Biology degree with the Medical Lab Science (MLS) option at MSUB are immediately eligible to become nationally certified. Certification is accomplished by passing the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification Medical Laboratory Scientist  Exam. See additional information for ASCP Certification here. The profession of Medical Laboratory  Scientist does not require a license in certain states. However, certain states do require a license to   practice in this field. Requirements for licensure vary from state to state. The ASCP Board of Certification examinations have been approved for licensure purposes by the state of Montana as well as the  following states/territories that require licensure. States without laws requiring licensure of medical laboratory scientists primarily accept ASCP Certification as a qualified credential to perform laboratory testing. In addition to the educational requirements for licensure in Montana, the following additional requirements must be met:

  • Must have passed a technician examination offered by a national certifying body for clinical  laboratory technicians (Clinical Laboratory Technician License)
  • Must have passed a specialist examination offered by a national certifying body for clinical laboratory specialists (Clinical Laboratory Specialist License) 
  • Must have passed a generalist examination offered by a national certifying body for clinical laboratory scientists (Clinical Laboratory Scientist License) 

Students should also be aware that criminal background, citizenship status, residency, age, and other factors may be a condition for licensure in Montana. Students are advised to review all available information on the Montana Board of Clinical Laboratory Science Practitioners website.
