K-12/Secondary Education Licensure Disclosures
The Teacher Education Program at Montana State University Billings is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) for the preparation of elementary and secondary teachers through the Bachelor’s degree, and school counselors, the Master of Education degree and the Master of Science in Special Education degree. The Montana State Board of Public Education accredits the Teacher Education Program. Students who wish to practice in a state other than Montana will have additional licensing requirements to complete prior to practicing in a state outside of Montana. Most states have provisions for individuals, credentialed in Montana, to teach on a temporary basis while they complete the additional requirements needed for a specific state. Each state is responsible for its own certification/licensure requirements. Although each state is different, if you have completed the MSUB teacher preparation program and hold a Montana teaching license, you may qualify for out of state teaching certificates by meeting specific coursework and exam requirements. You must contact the office of certification in any state in which you plan to teach to get the most accurate information on certification requirements. In addition to the educational requirements for licensure in Montana, the following additional requirements must be met:
- Elementary education candidates and Secondary and K-12 teaching majors and minors require a Praxis Subject Assessments subject (content) exam prior to licensure. The established Montana score requirement(s) must be met for a licensure recommendation to the Montana Office of Public Instruction or any other state’s licensure unit. Elementary and Secondary and K-12 major candidates are required to obtain a qualifying score on the Praxis exam in both the teaching major(s) and teaching minor(s) before a licensure recommendation is made.
Students should also be aware that criminal background, citizenship status, residency, age, and other factors may be a condition for licensure in Montana. Students are advised to review all available information on the Montana Board of Public Education website.
