Bently Spang Art Workshop
in Conjunction with National "Rock Your Mocs" Celebration

In this two-day workshop, nationally-known American Indian artist, Bently Spang, will
work with students to develop their personal symbology, a visual language of symbols
that identifies them as individuals. The MSUB Barstow ledger art collection, currently
on display in the Department of Art, will be used as an impetus for students to express
the impact of college on their life journey. Spang will offer students a brief introduction
to Native art and the methodologies of both historical and contemporary artists in
the development of a visual language to contextualize and inspire the project.
Canvas shoes, markers, and other embellishments will serve as the medium for the
project. Materials will be provided. Selected art story shoes will be displayed in
the student gallery cabinets in the Liberal Arts building through November 15-- national
“Rock Your Mocs” Day--a day honoring Native American heritage and culture.
Spang is an alumnus of MSUB (1991) and is a multi-disciplinary artist, curator, educator,
and writer working in mixed-media, sculpture, video, performance, and installation. Spang’s
artwork is held by museum and private collections across the US and Europe and his
work is included in the group exhibition The Plains Indians: Artists of Earth and Sky, which will travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2015.
Interested students should sign up in the Department of Art office on the 1st Floor
of the Liberal Arts Building. Space is limited.
