JoshuaDr. Joshua Poulette pushes students to think critically, conveying complicated ideas in interesting ways with energetic wit and unparalleled enthusiasm. In his two years as a university lecturer at MSUB, he has impressed his colleagues with his tremendous engagement and commitment to his students.

“His enthusiasm can be infections, enticing students to learn more about a specific subject matter has introduced,” his nominators say. “His teaching style engages students in topic discussions and encourages students to ‘teach’ one another through individual research and presentations of discussion modules. He uses simple models and examples to explain complex theories and concepts.”

One of his graduate students said that he exemplifies what students look for and need in a faculty member.

“He is an excellent teacher who stimulates student interest and pursues their understanding of the course materials,” the MPA candidate said. “He expresses sincere care about students as individuals and mentors them along their pathway to success.”

The 2015 Montana Poll Dr. Poulette took over this year is just one example of his teaching and scholarship excellence. He involved students in the process of developing and conducting the statewide telephone survey, interviewing 435 Montanans. Moreover, he invited the students to do original analyses on some of the poll items and present those findings at a press conference, results of which garnered statewide media coverage.

“This is the kind of undergraduate involvement in research that MSUB encourages and Dr. Poulette exemplifies the kind of faculty commitment to student participation that we ought to celebrate,” Department Chair Dr. Joy Honea says.

Honea also notes that his student evaluations are outstanding. “In addition to his numerical instructor rating often nearing a 5, the written comments are overwhelmingly positive.”

“He brings out the best in students and allows them to push through even their own expectations.”
