The mission of the RN to BSN Degree Completion Program is to further prepare nurses as professionals whose practice reflects evidence-based, ethical, and articulate practice in the nursing profession through further education.

The 49-credit-hour program is delivered online and will advance nurses’ careers by preparing them for a range of practice environments, for administrative duties and for graduate education.  The program adopts all major provisions of the Montana University System’s common curriculum recently established by the HealthCare Montana consortium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a nurse in order to be admitted to the program?

You do not have to be a nurse to enroll in courses, but you must have a current and unencumbered RN license to graduate from the RN to BSN program. Students may enroll in a concurrent enrollment plan of study and take corequisites and most nursing courses while enrolled in an associate degree nursing program. However, an unencumbered RN license is required to complete Community and Leadership nursing courses, which include a clinical component.

When does the program accept applications?

The RN to BSN completion program operates under a rolling acceptance model. Students can start fall, spring or summer with applications being accepted anytime during the year for the next available semester.  Future student just need to indicate their intended start semester and year.

Is the program offered all online?

Yes! All coursework is offered entirely online.

How many credits are required in the plan of study?

  • The RN to BSN program at MSUB requires 49 credit hours for degree completion, including 33 nursing credits and 16 corequisite credits (Technical Writing, Introduction to Statistics, Developmental Psychology, Dying and Medical Ethics, and Humanities).
  • Previous coursework is evaluated upon program entry to identify potential credits that will fulfill program requirements.
  • The plan of study is designed for an accelerated format with 8-week block scheduling for most courses.
  • If a student follows the full-time plan of study, the course work may be completed in three semesters (fall, spring and summer).  Part time plans of study are also available and may be individualized to suit your degree completion needs.

Are there clinical requirements for the RN to BSN plan of study?

Yes, there are two courses (Leadership and Community) that require faculty-led, clinical mentored projects. Part of these projects include clinical mentored hours in your community. You are not required to travel to complete these hours.

Are previous courses from another institution transferable?

Transferability will depend on the courses and university from which the course was completed. All previous academic coursework will be reviewed for transferability. Thirty-six upper division credits are required for a bachelor's degree and other transfer courses can count towards these credits.

How many credits are required from MSU Billings for graduation?

You must complete a minimum of 30 credits of coursework from MSUB to be eligible for graduation.
