The Graduate Assistantship program at MSU Billings provides the opportunity for students to engage in teaching, research, scholarly activity, professional service, or assistance with some campus program. Graduate assistantships are available as work-study positions. Teaching assistantships typically do not exceed 15 hours per week and research assistantships typically do not exceed 10 hours per week. Other types of graduate assistantships are varied but do not exceed 19 hours per week. Financial-aid eligible out-of-state graduate assistants will be eligible to receive in-state tuition.

Graduate students must be fully admitted into their program, and be in good standing. Positions open for the upcoming academic year in January and are typically reviewed and filled during April and May each year.

Partial Tuition Waiver: $1,500.00 per academic term

Job Description: Support faculty with courses. Tasks may include grading, occasional lecturing/lab set-up, meeting with and emailing students, developing student/alumni groups and websites, assisting with tasks/reports related to accreditation, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Special Considerations: Graduate Student currently enrolled in applicable college/department, excellent communication skills, competence in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and PowerPoint.

Job Description: The appointment is associated with research and may include the following responsibilities: 1. To complete a proposal or designed program of research under the supervision of a designated supervisor/major professor; 2. To be able to work on and contribute to collaborative research items; 3. To perform the following major duties that may include but are not limited to: reading and comprehending reports and other scientific literature; developing and following IRB proposals, conducting data analysis and computations; collecting data; writing research reports based upon data results; presenting data at conferences, scientific symposiums and professional society meetings with faculty; attending department and accreditation meetings; 4. Job Description: ASC Learning Specialist (10-15 hours per week).

Responsibilities include: Hold a regular weekly schedule of (writing and STEM) focused tutoring sessions (in drop-in, appointment, and online formats); complete outreach opportunities to promote the Writing Center, STEM Support, and the ASC as assigned; attend mandatory training sessions and staff meetings; provide supervision for tutoring staff when leadership team members are absent; collaborate with departmental team to build workshops or professional development opportunities for ASC staff; participate and provide leadership support during MSUB student orientation; provide weekly supervision to student tutoring staff during evening Study Halls held in the ASC.

Continued responsibilities: Help to manage the Online D2L ASC Center; facilitating Writing and/or STEM support; update information, announcements, and subject specific content; create and update handouts and workshops; maintain a supervisory presence in the University ASC (including training staff members, mentoring undergraduate students, and serving as a staff liaison); participate in departmental record keeping, scheduling, or assessment efforts; help deliver CRLA training to incoming tutoring staff.

Qualifications and Special Considerations: Graduate student, fully admitted to a MSUB graduate program, enrolled full-time and meeting or exceeding minimum GPA requirements for program. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including genuine commitment to the interests and goals of fellow learners. Demonstrated academic success and growth in chosen field of study. Strong organizational skills. Experience using learning technology platforms.

Desired: Previous teaching, tutoring, coaching, mentoring, or leadership experience. Ability to be reflective and metacognitive about tutoring practices. “Growth” or resilience mindset. Experience working with special student populations, including students with learning differences and second-language users. Experience with Microsoft Office products.

For Writing GAs, strong writing skills and extensive experience writing at the college level, as well as extensive experience with research and research writing. For STEM GAs, strong math/statistics skills as well as extensive experience with math/statistics-related research.

For Writing GAs, a writing sample is required with the application. The writing sample should be no more than five pages double-spaced, may be part of a longer text), and must demonstrates your success as writer. Writing samples and transcript copies (3.8 of higher in writing areas) should be sent to the program contact below.

For STEM GAs, a transcript with a 3.8 or higher GPA in the designated STEM area needs to be held by graduate. A faculty recommendation is preferred.

Job Description: The Graduate Assistant Coach reports to and is supervised by the Head Coach and assists the Head Coach, as directed by: • Planning and implementing practice sessions; • Providing input and other coaching related duties for home and away events; • Recruiting qualified, prospective student-athletes as allowed by NCAA rules; • Analyzing video tapes of potential student athletes for recruitment; • Scouting prospective opponents as allowed by contract and NCAA rules; • Assisting with team travel arrangements, such as transportation, hotels, and meals; • Facilitating the scheduling and supervision of practice opportunities by visiting teams; • Planning and implementing camps and clinics in the respective sport; • Assisting with the planning and implementation of departmental development and marketing events and activities; • Assisting with the oversight of the student-athletes academic achievement; • Assisting with game and event scheduling with opponents; and • Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach

Qualifications and Special Considerations:Bachelor’s Degree • Must be enrolled in a graduate program at Montana State University Billings • Collegiate  experience in athletics area preferred • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills • Ability to multi-task and work within a team environment • Desire to work with culturally diverse populations • Ability to work with people in fast paced and potentially hectic environment • Must have thorough understanding of special demands of the athletic environment with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, athletic department staff, boosters, University administration, faculty, and surrounding community

Job Description: Graduate Assistants will be responsible for a variety of activities, including but not limited to: *Conduct educational research which would enhance campus understanding of teaching and learning processes; *Assist faculty with instructional design and D2L technology issues; *Help design instructional and informational print and web-based materials for faculty and students; *Conduct needs assessments; *Design and distribute eLearning office communications; *Assist with instructional events hosted by eLearning. The eLearning Graduate Assistant position is typically for 19 hours per week.
