MSUB Department of Art’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition is on display at the Northcutt Steele Gallery through May 1. Guest Juror, Jane Waggoner Deschner, a local artist and graduate of MSUB, selected 39 artworks for inclusion in the exhibition.

Cash awards recognizing outstanding achievement were selected by Deschner and announced at a reception and ceremony held at the gallery on March 27. Regarding criteria for selecting awards, Gallery Director Leanne Gilbertson notes, “They are often based on a combination of factors including: aesthetic quality related to entries by peers; craftsmanship; integration of the artwork’s concept with formal choices; and indication of promising potential for a professional art career.”

The winners of this year’s awards were: Lillie Grace, Evolution, digital video (Best in Show); Holly Grob, Blast, mixed-media installation and wall painting (3-D Merit of Excellence); Sydne Sherman, Bedrooms, digital photography series (2-D Merit of Excellence); Dustin Auerbach, Raku I, stoneware (Honorable Mention); Ashley McClurg, Animal By-Product, mixed-media installation (Honorable Mention); and Stephanie Slavin, Sumi, digital photography (Honorable Mention).

In conjunction with the exhibition, Deschner will present an artist talk on the evolution of her work with found photographs on Thursday, April 10 in Library Room 148 next to the Gallery.

Deschner’s artwork is currently on view in the Un/Conscious Bent: A Survey of Regional Surrealism exhibition at Yellowstone Art Museum and she has a solo exhibition opening at Catherine Louisa Gallery on April 24.

Deschner has remarked upon her process: “When I interact with a photography, I connect us by teasing out a common humanity not confined by time, place or circumstance. I explore our shared humanity to better understand my own.” For more information about the artist visit: http://www.janedeschner.com.

The artist talk and exhibition are free and open to the public.
