On October 10 and 11 the Northcutt Steele Gallery, in conjunction with MSUB Potters’ Guild, and with the support of the Associated Students of MSUB, hosted a short-term artist residency for ceramic artist Benjie Heu. Heu worked in the Outer Gallery on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building of the MSUB campus, demonstrating his process, answering questions, and discussing his influences. The event was open to the public, allowing students from a variety of majors to interact with the artist. In addition, Heu offered critiques to upper-division studio art majors, focusing on the development of form and content in their own work.

Heu is Professor of Ceramics at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau and holds and MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University. His work explores the nature of personal identity in twenty-first century visual culture. Resembling scarred and marred toys, Heu’s figures journey across a post-apocalyptic landscape seeking truth and enlightenment.

Heu’s residency concluded with an artist talk given by the artist and the opening reception of his exhibit “Story Time,” which is currently on display at the Northcutt Steele Gallery.

The Nothcutt Steele Gallery is located on the 1st floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the MSUB campus and is open Monday–Friday from 8am to 4pm. Benjie Heu’s “Story Time” will be on display through November 8.
