I am a Professor in both
the Department of Health and Human Performance and the
Department of Educational Theory and Practice and I
taught and coached at the middle school, high school,
and college levels prior to coming to MSU-Billings.
My academic preparation in behavioral science and
exercise science blends with my personal experiences in
sport and physical activity to make me really fortunate
to be a professor in my two departments. In my
career, I have been fortunate in having had absolutely
incredible undergraduate and then graduate advisors and
I aim to someday being as skillful and effective as they
were

In
my research, I tend to focus on developmental impacts of
sport and physical activity, but have published in areas
as diverse as motor learning (i.e. free throw shooting),
psychometrics (i.e. test construction, measurement),
comparative teaching strategies (i.e. different means
for teaching accounting), comparative effectiveness of
different counseling treatments (i.e. methamphetamine
addicts), etc. I also write a regular article for
each issue of The Sports Page, a quarterly
publication of Montana Orthopedics and Sports Medicine,
and have made dozens of conference presentations on
topics related to teaching science through sport,
effective practice conditions, various aspects of sport
performance and rehabilitation, and similar topics. At
times, I also consult in activities such as expert
witness testimony, text reviewer, project evaluator,
etc. but my greatest professional pleasure involves
teaching and working with students. |

Committed to the service responsibilities that I believe
all professionals accept as part of being professional,
I serve on numerous boards, provide pro bono consulting
to schools and related agencies, and have served as a
department chair, associate dean, and chair of various
campus entities such as the Institutional Review Board.
In Health and Human Performance, I teach the following
courses:
HHP 300 Motor Learning & Control
HHP 364 Research Methods in Health & Human Performance
HHP 430 Exercise Physiology
HHP 550 Psychological Principles
HHP 499/599 Thesis |

Away
from campus, I prefer backcountry, telemark skiing above
other outdoor activities that I also love – such as
backpacking, hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, sea
kayaking, hunting, and traveling (which for me needs to have
an outdoor component). My wife and I have rafted the
Colorado River through the Grand Canyon unguided, spent six
weeks traipsing around Alaska with our three children when
they were aged 10, 12, and 14 (they now are 25, 27, and 29),
backpacked with our kids for two weeks at a time in New
Mexico when they were 1, 3, and 5 years old, and continue to
live as active, outdoor a lifestyle as possible. When one or
another of our adult children is willing, I have run over
the Beartooth Mountains with them, completed the Peaks to
Prairies Triathlon in tandem (run together, tandem bike, and
canoe), and try to keep up with them even though it slows
them down a bit. |
