MSU BILLINGS NEWS—Over 700 middle school students from Billings and surrounding areas will visit the City College campus at Montana State University Billings for Lewis and Clark Week from January 7-11. The program is presented by Our Montana Inc.

A unique learning opportunity that has earned a national award as an educational program, this is the fourteenth year the program will be held.

Volunteer presenters are a key part of the week; each presents in a different station focused on various aspects of the Lewis and Clark expedition including medicine, weather, plants and animals of the era, communication, Pompeys Pillar, flora and fauna, native sign language, and more. Students sample pemmican and hardtack at the food station. New this year is a grasslands station where students will build the skeletal system of a bison.

The stations are designed specifically for a middle-school audience and allow for hands-on demonstrations of the technology utilized by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Through these demonstrations, students are able to see how the Corps of Discovery met the challenges of their endeavor and compare the technology used today to accomplish the same tasks.

Also new this year is the opportunity for students to enjoy corn chowder soup prepared by Chef Bill Jensen with Café Protégé, the Career Center’s culinary program.

“This is an important event that we look forward to hosting each year,” commented Stephanie Cowen, Director of Student Services at City College. “City College connects the students with pathways and career exploration during this event, planting seeds of higher education for the future.”

All events will be held in the Tech Building at City College. The college’s teepee will also be on display in the commons for the students to explore.
