Box Score
ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Montana State Billings women’s soccer team dropped a tough, 2-1 decision to Cal State San Bernardino Saturday afternoon at Dixie State College in its 2009 regular season opener.
“Obviously disappointed with the loss, but at the same time I’m pleased with some of the things we did today,” MSUB head coach Don Trentham said. “CSUSB is a good team and had to play a good game to beat us.”
The Yellowjackets (0-1) were led by freshman Jaucelyn Richter who had four shots with three on goal, including her first collegiate goal with an assist from Samantha Sandau. Fellow freshman, Jennifer Larsen, had three shots with one on goal for the Yellowajackets.
CSUSB (1-1) was led by Unity Beddingfield who had three shots – all on goal and the game winner. Ashley Salas added the first goal for the Coyotes.
The Coyotes jumped out early as Salas scored off a corner kick just 2:43 into the contest with an assist from Lisa Montgomery. CSUSB held the 1-0 lead through the first half as it had a 4-3 lead in shots for the first stanza.
Beddingfield’s goal came in the 51st minute also off a corner kick and a rebound for a 2-0 lead.
Just 38 seconds later, the Yellowjackets got on the board at Richter was on the receiving end of a Sandau pass on a breakaway as she beat Coyote goalkeeper, Laura Lyons, for the score.
CSUSB held a 10-7 lead in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal for the game. MSUB goalkeeper, Jordan Fenwick, had five saves, while Lyons had three saves for the Coyotes. CSUSB held a 5-2 lead in corner kicks for the match.
MSUB continues in St. George as it will play host Dixie State (1-0) Monday at 11 a.m., before returning to Billings for the Seventh Annual MSU Billings Cup Presented by Best Western Clock Tower Inn, beginning Fri., Sept. 4, at Yellowjacket Field.
“There are a few things we need to work on to get to where we want to be and we will start working on those immediately so we can be ready to play against a good Dixie State team Monday,” Trentham added.
