15 Yellowjackets Named GNAC Scholar-Athletes
BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana State University Billings placed 15 student-athletes, eight women and seven men, on the 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic All-Star team announced Wednesday. It was the most of any conference school combined.
Leading that group was senior midfielder Melissa Carlson, who is a health and human performance major, in maintaining a 3.92 grade point average. The Renton, Wash., native, has the third-best overall GPA for the 66-member team and the second-best GPA on the 51-member women’s side behind Claire Grubbs of Seattle Pacific.
As a team, the women finished with eight named to the team which was tied with Northwest Nazarene for third in the league. Seattle Pacific and Saint Martin’s each had nine all-stars.
Completing the MSUB women’s honorees are senior defender Sara Gress, environmental studies, 3.76; sophomore defender Carly Valentine, human services, 3.73 GPA; sophomore defender Lauren Anderson, human services, 3.71 GPA; sophomore defender Samantha Boehm, public relations, 3.55 GPA; sophomore midfielder Kari Foreman, public relations, 3.44 GPA; senior midfielder Mandy Ploskonka, public relations, 3.44 GPA; and junior midfielder Chelsea Libby, health and human performance/pre-physical therapy, 3.39 GPA. Carlson, Gress, Ploskonka and Libby all were named to the team last year as well.
For the second year in a row, the MSUB men’s soccer team led the way with seven members name to the men’s team. Junior defender Tom Milroy leads the team with a 3.91 GPA in health and human performance. His 3.91 average is the best on the 15-member men’s side and fourth overall.
Completing the MSUB men’s honorees are senior midfielder Justin Hoskins, accounting, 3.89 GPA; junior forward Sam Charles, health and human performance, 3.74 GPA; sophomore forward Chris Andre, general studies, 3.52 GPA; junior midfielder Jarred Weisen, psychology, 3.32 GPA; senior midfielder Jurell Linford, elementary education, 3.31 GPA; and junior midfielder Jeremy DeHerrera, health and human performance/pre-med, 3.20 GPA. Milroy, Hoskins, Charles, Weisen and Linford all were named to the team last year.
