MSU BILLINGS NEWS— City College at Montana State University Billings is pleased to announce a Women in Apprenticeship and Non-traditional Occupations (WANTO) one-day exploratory workshop for women interested in pursuing a career in the trades industry.

The free workshop will be held Friday, Nov. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the City College campus. There are a limited number of spots available so those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible. A registration form can be found here.

Between 2016 and 2017, female registration in non-traditional apprenticeship programs in Montana have increased 240 percent, creating even more opportunities for women in the workforce. Because apprenticeships use merit-based pay, wage gaps based on gender are eliminated, and those who complete their apprenticeship earn an average wage of $60,000 per year.

City College at MSU Billings is home to a number of degrees within the realm of non-traditional occupations. Educational opportunities for these programs range from one year certificate options to two-year associates degrees.

Students of all ages are equipped with the information and resources they need for success in a variety of fields through City College’s many programs. This day will allow guests to get a taste of the trades and see if a non-traditional occupation is a good fit for their interests and aptitudes.

Participants can expect to learn about opportunities that are available for women in the trades, explore educational programs, and hear from women working in the trades industries. Employers will be on site and available to provide information and give presentations. Guests will also be able to participate in several hands-on demonstrations to learn more about the programs at City College.

Upon arrival, participants will check in at the City College Tech Building where they will receive a name badge and enjoy a free breakfast sponsored by NorthWestern Energy. Dr. Florence Garcia will be on campus to welcome guests and prepare them for a fun-filled day.

The workshop will begin with an overview of the schedule and information on the different apprenticeships and educational opportunities for students interested in these areas, followed by a tour of the Tech Building at City College and a team-building exercise. At 11 a.m. the workshop will feature employer presentations and opportunities to hear from individuals working in the industries. The afternoon will feature hands-on demonstrations for participants. Time for questions will be available during the day’s wrap up at 2:20 p.m.
