MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES —  Tami Haaland, Montana State University Billings associate professor of English and an award-winning poet, will be featured on the “The Write Question” on KEMC/Yellowstone Public Radio on Thursday evening, Sept. 20. The show, a weekly literary program from Montana Public Radio that explores the world of writing and publishing in the western United States, will be broadcast on YPR at 6:30 p.m.

Haaland has won many accolades for her writing over the past decade. Last winter, she was selected as a winner of the 2012 Montana Innovation Award from the state-funded Montana Arts Council.  The award was made possible through the National Endowment for the Arts.

“When We Wake in the Night,” her second collection of poetry, was published in June 2012. It was a finalist for the May Swenson Award, and two selections from this book will be featured on “American Life in Poetry” in the summer of 2013. Her first book, “Breath in Every Room,” won the Nicholas Roerich First Book Prize, and her poems have appeared on the “Writer's Almanac,” in High Desert Journal and 5 AM, and in several anthologies.

Originally from the Montana Highline where her grandparents homesteaded in the early 20th century, Haaland attended the University of Montana and received a B.A. and M.A. in English. Some years later, she received an MFA in Literature and Creative Writing from Bennington College.

She is also the editor of Stone’s Throw Magazine, an online literary journal.

The poems in “When We Wake in the Night,” have been described as “deft sketches of memory and experience” and the book is available at area booksellers as well as online at Amazon.
