It was noted that Item 20.b is being pulled by the Math Department.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to approve Items 20 through 20.a and
20.c through 20.g on first reading.
Mark Jacobson, Math Department, stated that these changes make the math
programs more rigorous and also streamline the courses for a better flow of
content. They are adding a few existing
courses to the programs. Maggie McBride,
Chair of Math, noted that they are moving the emphasis of the programs away
from statistics as their statistician retired.
The teaching licensure for multiple subject is
being deleted because the program was not as rigorous as it should be and most
students take the single subject program.
It was noted that the College of Education often advises their teacher
education students to double major, as it makes them more marketable when they
graduate.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Carl Castles, seconded by John Hoover
to waive second reading of Items 20, 20.a,
and 20.c through 20.g.
- Motion carried.
Item 21.d PHSX 105
Fundamentals of Physical Science. Delete
course.
Item 21.e PHSX 106
Fundamentals of Physical Science Lab.
Delete course.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Carl Castles
to approve Items 21.d and 21.e on first
reading.
Stan Wiatr, Chair of Biological & Physical Sciences, noted that PHSX
105 and its lab have not been successful at achieving the goals of the
course. It covers three physical science
disciplines for teacher education majors, and it’s too much crammed into a
single course. Stuart Snyder, Biological
& Physical Sciences, stated that he has tried for years to improve the
course, without success. They will move
to the model used by other universities, that teacher education students will
take courses in two of the three disciplines.
The current course can’t address the OPI standards. It was cited that this will basically add
four credits for teacher education majors, and it is the College of Education’s
responsibility to deal with that issue.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Tom Dell, seconded by Ying Wang to waive second reading of Items 21.d and
21.e.
- Motion carried.
Item 22.d BS Major in

Item 22.h BS Major in
Chemistry Teaching Licensure Option. Modification to an existing program.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Ying Wang to approve Items 22.d and 22.h on first
reading.
Dr. Wiatr noted that the math requirements in the biology program are
being updated. The courses in the chemistry
program are being reorganized to make more sense.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Carl Castles, seconded by Brian Gurney
to waive second reading of Items 22.d
and 22.h.
- Motion carried.
Item 22.j Teaching Minor in Chemistry. Modification to an existing
program.
Item 22.L Teaching Minor in
Geography. Modification
to an existing program.
Item 22.n Teaching Minor in
Earth Science. Modification
to an existing program.
Item 23.d CHMY 310
Scientific Literature. Delete course.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to approve Items 22.j, 22.L, 22.n, and
23.d on first reading.
Dr. Wiatr noted that CHMY 310 has not been taught in forever, and will
not be taught any time soon. The content
is also covered in other courses.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to waive second reading of Items 22.j,
22.L, 22.n, and 23.d.
- Motion carried.
Item 24 EDEC 298, EDEC

594, RD 517, RD 590, SCOU 590, SCOU 594, SPED 584, SPED 590, SPED 594, SPED
690. Change course description to add
lab fee and background check statements to each course.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Tom Dell to approve Items 24 and 24.a
on first reading.
It was noted that these changes just add statements to the course
descriptions regarding background checks and lab fees. The issue has arisen that students didn’t
know they had to complete a background check before working with students in
the classroom, and thus are held back in the course until the background check
is complete.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Rich Pierce
to waive second reading of Items 24 and
24.a.
- Motion carried.
Item 25 BS major in
Health and Human Performance Teacher Licensure Option. Modification to an existing
program.
Item 25.a BS major in
Health and Human Performance Health Promotion Option. Modification to an existing
program including option name change to Health and Wellness Option.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Ying Wang to approve Items 25 and 25.a
on first reading.
Jay Shaw, Chair of Health and Human Performance, stated that these
changes make their majors more compatible.
Changes to the teaching major also make it more appropriate for
teachers. It was noted that the
Department of Health and Human Performance cannot add courses to the teacher’s
professional core, so HTH 201 needs to be moved to a different part of the
program.
- Motion carried
- Motion by Tom Dell, seconded by Brian Gurney to waive second reading of Items 25 and 25.a
- Motion carried.
Item 25.b HTH 201

course
Item 25.c HTH 435 Health
and Wellness Across the Lifespan. New course.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Tom Dell to approve Items 25.b and 25.c on first
reading.
Mr. Shaw stated that current faculty will teach these new courses being
added to existing majors.
- Motion carried.
It was noted that these course proposals should include a staffing plan,
and are also missing the CCN forms.
Those items should be included for second reading.
Item 27 BS Major in
Health and Human Performance Human Performance Option. Modification to an existing
program.
Item 27.a NUTR 411
Nutrition for Sports and Exercise. Add
prerequisite and change course description.
Item 27.b KIN 462 Evidence
Based Assessment and Treatment. New course.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to approve Items 27 through 27.b on
first reading.
Mr. Shaw noted that some courses have been removed and others
added. It was noted that the program
proposal doesn’t make that very clear.
- Motion and second to approve were withdrawn.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Tom Dell to approve Item 27.a
on first reading.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Ying Wang to waive second reading of Item 27.a.

Living Skills. New
course.
Item 28.L REC 411
Adventure Guiding and Instructing. New course.
Item 28.m REC 470
Adventure Program Planning and Development.
New course.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to approve Items 28 through 28.m on
first reading.
Mr. Shaw noted that these will all be offerings in the Outdoor Adventure
Leadership program, to give students more flexibility and a better grasp of
content as well. MSUB is the only
institution to offer such courses, so they chose the REC rubric. Almost all of these courses will be staffed
by part-time faculty. The Department has
some equipment, and the part-time instructors have equipment they rent to students.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Rich Pierce
to waive second reading of Items 28
through 28.m.
- Motion carried.
Item 29 HHP 381
Adventure Counseling and Leadership.
Change rubric to REC, title to Leadership and Group Dynamics, and change
course description.
Item 29.a HHP 480 Advanced
Challenge Skills and Facilitation.
Change rubric to REC, change title to Challenge Course Skills and
Facilitation, and change course description.
Item 30 BS major in
Outdoor Adventure Leadership. Modification to an existing program.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to approve Items 29, 29.a, and 30 on
first reading.
Mr. Shaw noted that the titles for the two courses are inappropriate, so
they are fixing those. The program
change adds all the REC courses and gets rid of the “blocks” students were to
choose courses from. Instead, there will
now be levels. The program has the same
total credits with lots more flexibility for students.
It was noted that the second page of the forms for Items 29 and 29.a are blank.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Ying Wang to table Items 29, 29.a, and 30.
The meeting
adjourned at 5:16 p.m.
