Item 12.g HS 483
Treatment Perspectives of Chemical Dependency and Addictive Behaviors. Change title to Introduction to Addiction
Counseling, remove prerequisite, and change course description.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by John Hoover
to approve Items 12 through 12.g on
first reading.
It was noted that the six courses are in both the associate’s and
bachelor’s programs, and they are being modified to include addiction
counseling content. These changes will
allow graduates of the programs to apply for a Montana addiction counselor
license, which has been an issue for students in the past.
The bachelor’s program is also being modified because currently a
bachelor’s in counseling is not enough to find a job. Most counseling employers require at minimum,
a master’s degree, so the bachelor’s program is also being moved toward the
addiction counseling arena so it will be a marketable degree. The “Psychiatric Rehabilitation” name will
not be changed at this time, as it requires Board of Regents approval, but will
likely be changed in the future.
Students who graduate with the BS in Psychiatric Rehab will have
“emphasis in addiction counseling” on their diploma. There is no addition in credits as some SPED
courses have been removed as no longer appropriate. The capstone course is only offered online
right now, but that may change in the future.
Regarding Common Course Numbering, the Rehab program is unique across
the University System, so it will be less complex to make the changes.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Carl Castles, seconded by John Hoover
to waive second reading of Items 12
through 12.g.
- Motion carried.
