- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Cheryl
Young-Pelton to approve Items 8 through
8.i on first reading.
Dorothea Cromley, Chair of the Music Department, stated that in Spring 2010, their accrediting body made a visit and were
very pleased—they called us “a magical place”!
They recommended some changes to the music teaching option, and those
were done last year. They also
recommended changes to the performance option, and those are what we have
today. The program changes in Item 8.i
add new advanced courses to the basic core performance majors take, as well as
conducting and music technology.
Ms. Cromley noted the new courses also include classes on diction of
foreign languages, and all vocal majors should have those courses. The credits in the major area will vary,
because vocal students will take more credits.
The diction courses are now being taught by our fixed-term vocal
instructor, who has expertise in this area.
The Department hopes to move that line to a tenure-track line, rather
than fixed-term. All the courses in the
Department are offered on a two-year rotation because of class size. We also have many part-time instructors who teach the various instruments, but they have
been with MSUB for years and we can count on them.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Mark Jacobson, seconded by John Hoover
to waive second reading of Items 8
through 8.i.
- Motion carried.
Item
10 BA Major in
Music. Modification of
an existing program (adding a business track).
- Motion by Tom Dell, seconded by Brian Gurney to approve Item 10 on first reading.
Ms. Cromley stated that as an urban university involved in our
community, a hub of commerce and entertainment, our music students would
benefit from some business courses. The
College of Business helped devise a grouping of courses to help meet the Music
Department’s need. This is not a new
program and students graduating will receive a B.A. in Music, not Music &
Business. For this reason we do not need
BOR approval. However, students can
emphasize to employers the core of business courses they took. Students still have a major instrument in the
program, and the business track will not take longer or include more credits
than the non-business track. The
students in the business track will take fewer upper level music theory classes
to compensate for the business credits.
It was noted that the students cannot take everything in business, but
the web design course offered by the COB would be appropriate. Ms. Cromley agreed that they can advise
students to take the web design course if they have an interest.
- Motion carried.
- Motion by Brian Gurney, seconded by Ying Wang to waive second reading of Item 10.
- Motion carried.
The meeting
adjourned at 4:22 p.m.
