Safety Tips
| To
minimize the possibility of your being a victim
of property loss or injury: |
|
Keep
your room door locked even when gone for only a
few minutes |
|
Keep
your vehicle locked and do not leave packages
and personal items inside |
|
When
walking at night, stay in lighted areas and, if
possible, do not walk alone |
| |
|
Use
your eyes and ears!
Report any
of the following: |
|
Strangers
loitering in or near campus buildings. |
|
Harassing
or obscene phone calls. |
|
Any
emergency, such as an accident, a fire, a
critically ill or injured person. |
|
Locks,
doors, or windows that need repair or servicing. |
|
Any
unusual or suspicious activity. |
| |
|
Remember:
If it worries you, the police need to know. They
would rather be called and not needed than needed
and not called. |
|
|
| What
to do: Be Aware, Be on the Lookout, and Report |
| 1. |
Unusual
noises that you can't explain--for example,
breaking glass, a scream, or loud or angry
voices. |
|
Property
being carried out of an office or residence you
know is not occupied. |
|
Any
emergency, such as an accident, a fire, a sick
or injured person. |
|
Someone
looking into windows or parked cars. |
|
Someone
hanging around the residence hall or other
campus buildings with no apparent clear purpose. |
|

Test your Street Sense
Do you:
- Stay
alert and tuned into your surroundings?
- Communicate
the message that you're calm, confident, and
know where you're going?
- Stick
to well-lighted busy streets?
- Walk
or jog with a companion?
- Keep
your car locked at all times?
- Avoid
flashing cash or valuables?
- Have
your keys in hand as you approach your car,
dorm, or apartment?
- Know
whom to call if there is a problem in your
neighborhood?
Before you leave for college:
- If
you have a vehicle, bring an extra key and
secure it in your new residence.
- Make
a list of all serial numbers and model numbers
of valuable items such as your stereo,
television, VCR, computer equipment or bicycle.
Leave that list at your permanent address.
- Check
with your insurance company to see if your
belongings are covered under existing policy. If
not, you may want to consider an addition to
your current coverage.
The University Police
Department is also the central location for lost and
found items. If you have lost something, contact this
office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. You should
put your name in text books to help identify them as
yours.
If you have any
questions or concerns, contact us at any time. We hope
you enjoy the campus community and regard it as your new
home.
