Submission Process

If you are conducting human subjects research, you must submit an application to the IRB. Information about the current members on the board can be found here. If you are unsure whether you should submit an IRB, please contact the Office of Research Compliance or refer to our decision tree.

All applicants are required to take the CITI human subjects research training.  Links to both, along with the federal Code of Regulations, can be found here:

Applications should be sent to the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs through one of two ways:

  • Electronic application
    • Faculty members can submit IRB applications with electronic signatures.
    • Students can submit electronic applications as long as it contains a scanned copy of the physical signatures page or the application has been signed via DocuSign. Student applications are not accepted without the signed approval of faculty mentors.
    • Please email applications to irb@msubillings.edu.
  • Physical application
    • Physical applications can be brought to McMullen room 205.
    • Physical signatures or DocuSign signaturess are required of all student applicants. No other signature types will be accepted on student applications.

Before submitting, please take a quick look through our submission checklist. Incomplete or incorrect applications can greatly slow down the review process.

Please note that all applications proposing work on an American Indian reservation or with individuals registered with a U.S. tribe will require, at minimum, a review of the application by the Director of the Native American Center. Depending on the location of study, outside IRB approval (tribal institutions) may be required as well.
