Not In Our State Sexual Assault Summit 2014

Montana State University Billings’ Phoenix Center is proud to announce the third annual Not in Our State Sexual Assault Statewide Summit to be held Sept. 19-20 on the MSUB campus.

The summit brings together professionals, leaders and students from around the state to participate in an educational training program following best practices surrounding sexual violence.

Montana universities and their surrounding communities are able to learn how to empower survivors of sexual violence and learn how to create a campus climate that is free from oppression. Attendees will learn how to provide a safe, supportive campus and community through education and primary prevention initiatives.

Heather ImrieHeadlining the two-day conference is Heather Imrie, a nationally respected director of program development at Catharsis Productions.

Imrie received her master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Illinois in 2008 and is currently working toward a doctorate in educational psychology. She has created and presented sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment, hate crime, systems of oppression, victim blaming and bystander intervention training to crisis centers, universities and military installations around the world. In addition, she has developed and implemented various, notable anti-violence programs and advocacy initiatives as the former associate director of the Campus Advocacy Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Imrie’s experience and dedication to creating communities of non-violence will inspire attendees to continue changing and improving efforts to end sexual violence in the state of Montana.

In addition to the professional presenters, the conference will also feature many student-led workshops and presentations for student leaders, residence assistants and members of student government from Montana universities. Discussions will focus on student coalitions and peer education about enthusiastic consent, bystander intervention and the empowerment model of advocacy.

Organized by the MSU Billings Phoenix Center and a committee of students, the summit aims to inspire and empower Montana campuses to shape campus policies and serve as an aggregate space for educational materials and resources.

Registration for the summit will open August 15. Conference details and registration can be found at msubillings.edu/nios.
