General Resources

  • Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf
    One of the oldest and most comprehensive organizations focused on pediatric hearing loss. The Organization also educates the general public about technological advances for the deaf and hearing impaired and advocates legislation.
  • Auditory-Verbal International
    AVI provides the choice of listening and speaking for children who are deaf or hard of hearing through education, advocacy, and family support. Sponsors research related to hearing impairment, encourages international communication among parents and professionals, and educates health care providers and consumers about the auditory-verbal approach.
  • Boys Town National Research Hospital
    Boys Town National Research Hospital is recognized for model programs relating to childhood deafness, language and learning.  The Hospital provides leading edge research in the identification of hearing loss, fitting of hearing aids, and educational materials for hearing impaired children and their parents.
  • Central Institute for the Deaf
    CID is a unique network of resources central to knowledge and the progressive treatment of adult and childhood deafness.
  • CODA - Children of Deaf Adults
    A highly recognized international support group for the hearing children of deaf parents, CODA offers newsletters, a discussion forum, and information about upcoming conversations.
  • Dangerous Decibles
    Dangerous Decibels has many resources that can be applied in practices, schools and other settings to promote hearing loss prevention, especially in children.
  • Deaflife
    Read back issues, take opinion polls on deaf issues and more at this deaf community magazine's website.
  • Deafness Research Foundation
    National organization whose goal is the cure and prevention of all forms of hearing loss.
  • Family Village! Deaf/Hard of Hearing resources
    Family Village! is a global community that integrates information, resources, and communication opportunities on the Internet for persons with cognitive and other disabilities, for their families, and for those that provide them services and support.
  • Gallaudet University
    Gallaudet is the world's only university geared specifically to the needs of the deaf. The site includes links to other deaf schools in the United States.
  • HIP Magazine (for back issues; new publications discontinued)
    The award-winning magazine for deaf children and pre-teens.
  • Listen Up
    The Listen Up web page was developed by a parent with the goal of making a web site that is a one stop place for information, answers, help, ideas, resources, and anything else related to hearing-impairment.
  • National Association of the Deaf
    The NAD advocates the civil rights of the deaf and hard-of-hearing in a variety of areas including education, employment, health care, social services, and telecommunications.
  • Self Help for Hard of Hearing People
    Welcome to Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH). I hope you will find our website friendly and informative. We are the nation's foremost association representing consumers (26 million people) who are hard of hearing. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for people who are hard of hearing. We are proud of the efforts of our 250 affiliates located in towns like yours and mine advocating, educating and helping one another with hearing loss.

  • The World Around You: A Magazine for Deaf Teens
    This site is not regularly updated, but offers an interesting array of articles from back issues on topics concerning deaf teenagers.
  • Virtual Tour of the Ear
    Augustana College's general resource directory for the deaf and hearing-impaired, with links to sites dealing with everything from cochlear implants to schools for the deaf.

  • American Academy of Audiology
    Resource site for professionals who test, treat and provide care to the deaf or hard-of-hearing.

  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
    Information for professionals working in audiology, speech-language pathology, and the speech and hearing sciences.  The organization is also an advocate for people with communication disabilities.

  • American Sign Language Teachers Association
    Provides ASL professionals with information on deaf culture, instructional methods, materials and evaluation techniques.

  • Council on Education of the Deaf
    This site is dedicated to the exchange of information about deaf education, from recommended teaching strategies to curriculum materials.

  • Gallaudet Research Institute
    Information on research conducted by Gallaudet Research Institute, one of the world's premier deafness-related research centers, into deaf health care services, demographics, literacy and more.

  • American Sign Language (ASL) Browser
    Michigan State University's ASL Browser web site, an online American Sign Language (ASL) browser where you can look up videos of thousands of ASL signs and learn interesting things about them.

  • Handspeak.com
    This online ASL dictionary, reportedly the largest on the Web, offers 3,090 animated signs, from "accounting" to "Zen".

  • Sign Writing
    This detailed, award-winning site offers extensive information on how to read and write in signed languages.
