Presenter: Polly Gessele,
SRA/McGraw-Hill
MSU Billings College of Education
Building
Room 122
Number Worlds is a comprehensive
program designed to help at-risk
students improve their
understanding of math. The
program is comprised of two
parts: The unique Prevention
program is a 30-week course of
daily instruction for children
in Grades Pre-K-1 that improves
children's grasp of the world of
math. It is designed to catch
any comprehension problems early
on, then allow the children to
move forward with the head start
they need. The intensive
Intervention portion of the
program focuses on students who
are one or more grade levels
behind in mathematics. It
consists of six 4-week units
that allow educators the
flexibility to work with

Positive Behavior Supports Case
Study Groups: Supporting School
Based Teams
MSU Billings College of Education
Building
Room 122
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is
an approach to helping people
improve their difficult behavior
that is based on four things:
1.
An understanding that people
do not control others, but seek to
support others in their own behavior
change process
2.
A belief that there is
a reason behind most difficult
behavior, that people with difficult
behavior should be treated with
compassion and respect, and that
they are entitled to lives of
quality as well as effective
services
3.
The application of a large
and growing body of knowledge about
how to better understand people and
make humane changes in their lives
that can reduce the occurrence of
difficult behavior
4.
A conviction to continually
move away from coercion, the use of
unpleasant events, to manage
behavior
Participants are required to
present a brief case summary for
discussion and are encouraged to
remain for the duration of the
learning group to participate in all
of the case presentations. Cases may
be presented orally, however short
video presentations of 5-10 minutes,
are preferred for the group to
review. Each case will be allotted a
one‑hour review. A signed student
information release form from the

presentation is required.

Featured Speaker Luncheon: Children
with Tourette Syndrome
Presenter: Dr. James Peak, MD
MSU Billings College of Education
Building
Room 122
A
child with Tourette Syndrome in the
classroom may bear the outward
appearance of a child with behavior
problems: defiant, stubborn,
emitting sounds, displaying unusual
physical mannerisms, unwilling to
cooperate. He may be disciplined for
things he cannot control and given
low grades for things he cannot
accomplish. He is probably teased
and sometimes imitated by other
students. (National Tourette
Syndrome Association:
http://tsa-usa.org/index.html)
Come and join us as Dr. James Peak,
MD, talks about the rewards and
challenges of working with children
who have Tourette Syndrome.
Particular attention will be placed
on strategies for both school and
home.
