Library and Off-campus Access

Your Library Account lets you see what you have checked out, when things are due, and the amount of your fines if you have any.

Off-campus access allows you to log in to library resources, like the databases or full text research articles, when you are not on campus.

You will use the same user name and password for both accounts, and going through this process once will make the change for both.

There are three ways to initiate the password changing process; they are as follows:

      Through your library account

1.    To log on to your library account, go to the library website: http://www.msubillings.edu/library.

2.    On the bottom right hand corner of the screen, in the teal box titled “Access Points,” click on “Your Library Account” (the first item in the list).

3.    On the “My Account” page click on “Review my Account.”

4.    It is likely that you will need to click on the “change your password” link (located in the sentence below the entry boxes).

Through the Off-Campus Access link (a good choice if you are a new student)

    1. Go to the library website: http://www.msubillings.edu/library
    2. In the teal “Access Points” box (in the lower right hand corner) click on “Off-Campus Access,” the fourth item in the list.
    3. Under the heading “MSU-Billings Students, Faculty and Staff” click on the link in the sentence “If you are a new student get your password here.”

Through the “Find an Article” section

1.   If you are doing research on your computer at home and attempt to access one of the research databases, Academic Search Premier for example, you will be taken to a page with a box titled “Library Proxy Service Secure Login.”

2.    At the bottom of the box there are two links: “Get a new password,” and “Change your password.” (If you know your password you can click on this and it will take you through a process very similar to that described below.) If you don’t know what your password is, click on “Get a new password.”

Any of these routes will take you to a page asking for your student ID and your first and last initials. After entering your student ID and password, further instructions will be sent to your MyPortal email address. If you do not use the MyPortal email you can ask a librarian to send the instructions to your preferred email any of these three ways:

A. Call the library reference desk: 657-1662.

B. Come to library reference desk in person.

C. Send an email to either Jan Fandrich jfandrich@msubillings.edu

or Brent Roberts broberts@msubillings.edu

ILLiad or ILL or Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan is a service which allows you to access materials that are not available in the MSU Billings library, but are available elsewhere. This would include items found by searching WorldCat, and the Montana Library Network Catalog.

            1. Go to the library website: http://www.msubillings.edu/library

            2. In the blue box titled “Library Services” (in the middle of the page) click on Interlibrary Loan (the third item in the list).

            3. On the screen saying “Welcome!” scroll to the bottom and click on the “First Time Users Click Here” button (next to the dancing exclamation point).

            4. Next, fill in your password and other information and click on the “Submit Information” button near the bottom of the page.

            5. You should now be able to request items through Interlibrary Loan. If you have any problems or questions you can email or call Cheryl Hoover at 657-1666 or choover@msubillings.edu

Student Logon

This is where you check your grades, look at your bill, add and drop classes, etc… It is also referred to as MyInfo and Student Banner Logon

  1. Go to the University website: http://www.msubillings.edu.
  2. Click on the grey button that says “Student Logon.” (It’s in the bottom left hand corner.)
  3. A page will open that says “Welcome to MSU Billings.” On that page, click on the link that says “Enter Secure Area.”
  4. That will take you to the User Login page. In the box that says “User ID” enter your Student ID number (sometimes called your Banner ID) with the dash, or your Social Security Number. In the box that says “PIN” put in the PIN number you set up with your advisor when you registered (probably your birth date switched around). Next, click on the “Login” button.

5. If you have any problems call the Registrar office: 657-2158

MyPortal

Your official university email

         1. Go to the University website: http://www.msubillings.edu

2. Click on the link that says Portal Logon My MSU. (It’s in the left hand bottom corner on the page between the search box and the Student Logon button.)

          3. In most cases*, your username is your first name and last name with a period in between:

john.doe

4. The first time you log in, your password will be your 6 digit birthdate, mmddyy, the same as your initial PIN for your Student Logon (aka MyInfo or Banner Web).

5. If you have any problems call IT (Information Technology): 247-5755

*There are some exceptions: long names may be truncated; some common names such as Smith or Jones may have a number after the name.

Campus Computers

This includes the Information Commons lab on the first floor of the Library, COE room 158 [Spring 2008--COE 158 Lab temporarily relocated to COE 401], COB, ASC, and the residence hall computer labs.

1.      Make Sure the Domain box says “Student.”

2.    Your user name for the computer lab is the same as it is for your MyPortal; it’s your first name and last name with a period in between:

john.doe

3.  Your password the first time you log in will be your birthday:

mmddyy

4.  The first time you log in a pop-up box will tell you that your password has expired and then it will make you change it. So the next time you log in, your password will be whatever you have changed it to.

5.  For more help you can ask the IT assistant if there is one present, or call IT Student Support at 247-5755, or stop by Room 158 in the College of Education (bring a photo ID). [Spring 2008--COE 158 Lab temporarily relocated to COE 401]

Campus Wireless Access

Wireless access is available on campus in these locations: the Library, the LA-Library Corridor, the Student Union Building, Broadway II & III, the COB & COE Student lounges, and the COT Commons. In order to use campus wireless access you need to bring your laptop to Room 158 in the COE building. There it will be checked for viruses and then registered. [Spring 2008--COE 158 Lab temporarily relocated to COE 401]

eCollege/ eCompanion

1. Go to the University’s website: http://www.msubillings.edu

2. Click on the “Online University” link in the column on the left hand side of the page (it’s the last item).

3. If you don’t know your password click on the “Need Password/User ID?” link next to the “Go to Class” button at the bottom of the page.

4. Fill in the information requested by the boxes. If you don’t know your preferred email*, it’s probably a good idea to fill in both the “User ID” and the “Email Address” boxes.

5. Finally, press the “Search” button and your password will be sent to your email momentarily.

*If you want to change your preferred email, (the one the university will use to contact you) the following instructions will help you.

 Update Preferred Email in Banner

1. To check your email account, go to http://www.msubillings.edu

2. Click on Student Logon in the lower left.

3. Click “Enter Secure Area.”

4. Enter login. If you have not logged in here previously, the User ID is your student ID number (with dash) and PIN is your 6-digit birth date, which you will be required to change. If you have logged in previously but have forgotten your PIN, you can call the Registrar: 657-2158.

5. Next, click "Personal Information."

6. Next, click "Update Email address(es)" (The eCompanion login message was sent to your Personal Preferred email address. If you see your Personal Preferred email address, and you like it, and you want eCompanion messages to come to that message, you can leave it alone.)

To add your preferred email address, pull down the drop-box under “Type of Email to Insert” and select email address. Then enter your preferred email and check the preferred box.
