ARTICLES

Library Homepage  >  Find Articles  >  Electronic Indexes

Expanded Academic:  In the Advanced Search, enter your author's last name as Subject and enter the title of the work (without The, A, etc) as a Keyword or Title.

MLA Bibliography:  Enter both author name and work title as keywords.  (If you have too many results, enter the work title as Title.)

Gale Literary Databases:  Better for more recent writers, but you can also find material on older authors/works as well.  Enter author's last name in the "Author Name" box, and work title (without The, A, etc) in the "Title of Work" box.

ArticleFirst:  Not devoted specifically to literature, but covers many academic journals.  Use author name and work title as either Keywords or Title words.

NorthernLight Special Collection:  From the main page (http://www.northernlight.com), click on "Power Search" and then click the button to select "Special Collection."  This searches a number of popular and academic periodicals, some of which are free, and some of which are not.  For those that are not free, check the Library collection.

Of these, only Expanded Academic has much full text.  When you find a citation (including article title & date, author name, and periodical title) and want to get the article, do the following:

1)  Is the article available electronically?

Library Homepage  >  Find Articles  >  Full-Text Finder

Enter the title of the periodical (NOT the article title!).  This tool will tell you which database (if any) has that periodical full text and for which years.  You can then enter the database and search for your article.

2)  Is the article available in the Library?

A.      Library Catalog:  Library Homepage  >  Find Books  >  Library Catalog

Enter the title of the periodical and click "Periodical Title."  If the Library subscribes to the periodical, you will see which years we have, and then you can find the item and make copies.

B.       MSU-Billings Periodicals Holdings Binder:  If you're in the Library, this binder can be found throughout the building.  It is a master list of all the periodicals the Library has ever subscribed to, and the years our subscription covers.

3)  Order the article via Interlibrary Loan

Library Homepage  >  Library Services  >  ILL/Resource Sharing

When the item is not available either electronically or in the Library, you may order the item via Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  Fill out the online Article Request Form, and be sure to include your email address.  Many articles can be emailed directly to you.

BOOKS

Library Homepage  >  Find Books  >  Library Catalog

By Author

Enter your author's last name and click Subject.  Click Forward until you find the subject subdivision "Criticism and Interpretation."

By Work

Type in your title (without The, A, etc.) and click Title.  This brings up all books with your title in the title (and usually includes most books about the work).  Also try entering the title and clicking on Subject.  Sometimes more famous works have their own subject headings.

General Works & Browsing

If you haven't decided on a particular author or work, but would like to browse to see what is available, visit the Library Reference Section.  Look between call numbers PN-PS, and most genres/groups of works and authors are covered in one handbook, dictionary, or encyclopedia.
