Academic:
In the Advanced Search, enter your author's last name as Subject and
enter the title of the work (without The, A, etc) as a Keyword or Title.
MLA
Bibliography: Enter both author name
and work title as keywords. (If you
have too many results, enter the work title as Title.)
Gale
Literary Databases:
Better for more recent writers, but you can also find material on older
authors/works as well. Enter
author's last name in the "Author Name" box, and work title (without
The, A, etc) in the "Title of Work" box.
ArticleFirst: Not devoted specifically
to literature, but covers many academic journals.
Use author name and work title as either Keywords or Title words.
NorthernLight
Special Collection:
From the main page (http://www.northernlight.com), click on "Power
Search" and then click the button to select "Special Collection."
This searches a number of popular and academic periodicals, some of which
are free, and some of which are not. For
those that are not free, check the Library collection.
Of these, only Expanded Academic has much full text.
When you find a citation (including article title & date, author
name, and periodical title) and want to get the article, do the following:
1) Is the article available
electronically?

Full-Text Finder
Enter
the title of the periodical (NOT the article title!).
This tool will tell you which database (if any) has that periodical full
text and for which years. You can
then enter the database and search for your article.
2) Is the article available
in the Library?

Library Catalog
Enter
the title of the periodical and click "Periodical Title."
If the Library subscribes to the periodical, you will see which years we
have, and then you can find the item and make copies.

Holdings Binder:
If you're in the Library, this binder can be found throughout the
building. It is a master list of
all the periodicals the Library has ever subscribed to, and the years our
subscription covers.
3) Order the article via
Interlibrary Loan

ILL/Resource Sharing
When
the item is not available either electronically or in the Library, you may order
the item via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Fill
out the online Article Request Form, and be sure to include your email address.
Many articles can be emailed directly to you.
BOOKS
Library Homepage > Find Books
> Library Catalog
By Author
Enter your author's last name and click Subject.
Click Forward until you find the subject subdivision "Criticism and
Interpretation."
By Work
Type in your title (without The, A, etc.) and click Title.
This brings up all books with your title in the title (and usually
includes most books about the work).
Also try entering the title and clicking on Subject.
Sometimes more famous works have their own subject headings.
General Works & Browsing
If you haven't decided on a particular author or work, but would like to
browse to see what is available, visit the Library Reference Section.
Look between call numbers PN-PS, and most genres/groups of works and
authors are covered in one handbook, dictionary, or encyclopedia.
