The following list  includes publications from the Blackfeet Heritage Program and the Council for Indian Education located in Special Collections with second copies located in the Book Stacks.  Most of these booklets contain stories from tribes residing in Montana, including: Crow, Blackfeet, and Northern Cheyenne stories. 

Indian Reading Series (Government Documents stacks)

The following is a list of almost 100 book titles from the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory in Portland, Oregon.  These booklets are located in the Government Documents Stacks, 2nd floor, Library, under the call number ED 1.319: story number.  Each story is written for a specific reading level and the series includes stories from tribes in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska.  A teacher's manual is also available.  These booklets can be checked-out.

Information About the Collection

This collection of booklets began with the Council for Indian Education in the 1970s.  Dr. Cleburne (Hap) Gilliland was instrumental in creation of this project.  As a professor and Director of the Reading Clinic at the College of Education, Eastern Montana College, one of his interests was gathering Native American stories from the various tribes residing in Montana.  The MSU-Billings Library has tried to acquire most of these publications, as well as Hap Gilliland's other publications.  First copies are located in Special Collections and second copies are located in the books stacks.

Some titles from the 1970s-1980s were also published under the following: the Montana Reading Publications, Montana Indian Publications, Montana Council for Indian Education, and the Montana Fund for Indian Education.  In addition, the Council for Indian Education often jointly published with the Blackfeet Heritage Progam and the Heart Butte Bilingual Education Center or Heart Butte Bilingual Program.
