Information About the Collection

Artists' Books: Visual Literary Expressions, an invitational international exhibit featuring forty-eight one-of-a-kind and limited edition books was curated by Connie Landis,, chair of the MSU-Billings Art Department in January and February of 2000.  Artists from the United States, New Zealand, England, Canada created works for the exhibition.  According to Ms. Landis, an artist's book is a piece art in itself with the structural form of a book and the content or ideas of a book interwoven to communicate the artists' message.

Under the direction of Jane Howell, Library Director, the MSU-Billings Library purchased selected pieces through funding from the Foundation of MSU-Billings.  These art works are housed in the Special Collections vault.  As librarians, we like to view the book as valuable for its contents, but books also have important artistic and cultural value as well.  Contact Jane Howell, for additional information about these items.

In 2001, Connie Landis and Paula Duffy, Special Collections Librarian, implemented a project to preserve and promote these unique materials in the Montana.  The MSU-Billings RACE/IPD Committee and the MSU-Billings Library funded this component of the project.  Phase One of involved preserving and housing the materials.  An inventory of the works was created with the List of Artists' Books in the MSU-Billings Library Special Collections.  The MSU-Billings Library and the Art Department plan to work toward future promotion and development of this project.
