7 HABITS OF HIGHTLY EFFECITVE TEENS
Mon – Fri, June 8 – 12, 9:00a – noon, (ages 13 – 16 year old)
$139 per camper

Sean Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens has sold over 3 million copes and impacted the lives of students around the world. Administrators, teachers, and students have consistently indicated the The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens has improved self-esteem, character, relationships, attendance, leadership, time-management skills, overall achievement, test scores and overall school culture. Students reflect on their lives while learning to interact with peers, and discover their own potential. Each student will receive their own copy of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.

Instructor: Jillian Miller has been working with teenagers as a family and consumer science teacher for 20 years. Her excitement for this class is contagious.

NATIONAL TREASURES:  THE REAL DEAL
Mon – Fri, June 8 – 12, 1:00p – 4:00p (kids ages 9-12)
$129 per Camper

You’ve seen the movies and know the characters. Now bring it to life! In this camp, you will follow the clues to protect the treasure before it’s too late. Discover fascinating facts about America and use cool tools to keep track of your clues, and ultimately the treasure! When this camp is over you’ll understand web quest, demonstrate an understanding of search engines and learn how to use, create and manage a group blog.  And you’ll be having so much fun saving the treasure that you won’t even realize how much you’ve learned.

Instructor: Mandi Crable loves to learn and explore with others. She is a lifelong Girl Scout who has been teaching camps for 5 years. She is currently a Special Ed teacher at Meadowlark Elementary.

RUN FOR FUN
Mon – Fri, June 8 – 12, 9:00a – 10:30a (kids ages 6-9)
$99 per camper
SPYT 140

This is a camp that is designed to teach young kids how much fun running can be and the healthy benefits of running. The camp will last two hours with approximately one hour spent learning about running and the body, and the other hour doing some sort of physical activity that involves running. Each day we will have an activity which will not just be “a run.” Some days we will be running as a group, participating in relays, and a variety of other games will be played. If you are looking for a camp in which your child can be active, this is the camp for you. On the last day of the camp (Friday) we will host a mini track meet in which parents can watch kids participate in a variety of running events. There will be awards for the finishers in each race. The more participants in this camp the better due to the track meet finale! Information will also be passed out concerning the Big Sky State games if your child wants to participate in a larger event. We will also explore, different types of races, famous runners, necessary items for runners, important muscles and much more!

Instructor: Lauren Wright – is going to teach you how to get fit and have fun doing it.

CRAZY CHEMISTRY
Tue – Thur, June 9 – 11, 9:00a – noon, (kids entering 1 – 6 grade)

Become a Mad Science chemist as you learn all about the chemistry things that you encounter everyday in your house and school. Discover how chemical reactions are everywhere and how you can figure out if a chemical change has occurred right before your very eyes. Mix, mush and brew together different chemicals to create things that you can use in this hands-on chemistry lab. The Mad Science program encourages children to explore different science concepts in a FUN, exciting, educational, & interactive format. The goal of this program is to spark your child’s imagination as they explore different science disciplines through hands-on experiments and exciting demonstrations.

EXTINCT NO LONGER!  DIGG’N DINO’S IS BACK!!
Mon – Fri, June 15-19, 9:00a - noon (kids ages 6, 7 and 8)
$149 per Camper

They may be extinct but these fascinating, bigger than life creatures are the theme for this extremely popular camp. If you are fascinated by, curious about, or interested in dinosaurs this is the camp for you. You will spend the week exploring, creating, and learning through a variety of hands on art and science activities all involving DINOSAURS! Be sure to wear clothes you can get dirty in.

Instructor: Connie Duneman loves kids and dinosaurs…so she’s just about the best person in the world to teach this camp. She’s also a REALLY cool 2nd grade teacher!

DIGITAL MOVIE MAKING
Mon – Fri, June 15 – 19, 9:00a – noon (ages 11 – 15 year old)
$119 per camper

Moving pictures have become a predominant form of communication in our time and this camp will embrace that fact by giving kids the opportunity to make their own movies. Participants will explore the nature of movies, new internet formats such as YouTube, how they are put together and how they work, so they can then apply that knowledge in a collaborative environment of digital video production. The camp will explore storytelling as the basis of moviemaking as we write and develop stories that will be produced on the MSU Billings campus using digital video cameras and non-linear editing software.  Four your convenience this camp is offered twice.

Instructor: Mark Sanderson is a creative educator who uses art, technology, and writing to engage students in the movie making process. 

ADVENTURES IN CLAY
MSUB Main Campus, Art Annex Building on the corner of N 27th & Poly Drive
Mon – Fri, June 15-19,  9:00a - noon (kids ages 10 – 14)
$129 per Camper

In this fun, messy, creative camp, you’ll learn how to throw a bowl on the potter's wheel, hand build a textured vase, and model a creature in clay. We will be firing and glazing your projects.  Come prepared with a small 1 gallon bucket, apron, and an old towel because we will be getting messy! No experience with clay necessary.

Instructor: Lea Zoltowski is a wonderful artist who is also a professor at MSUB. She’s great at inspiring creativity in kids.

ROCK CLIMBING CAMP

A fun and exciting sport Rock Climbing is a perfect summer activity!!! This camp will teach you how to climb safely, belay, and rappel using the 2,500 sq. foot climbing area at SteepWorld Climbing Gym. For your convenience this camp is offered three times.

GIRLS ROCK
Tue – Fri, June 16-19, 9:00a – noon, (ages 13 – 16 year old)
$139 per camper

This fun class for girls will explore wellness from inside to outside. We will talk about eating (and make a nutritious snack), exercising (can you says yoga?) and the importance of sleep for overall health. You will also learn about relaxing, the negative impact of stress and self confidence! We will also explore “real beauty”empower girls to feel good about themselves and individual fashion and skin health. Gregory Miller Photography offers a free photo shoot of each girl at the end of camp on Friday. Each girl will receive a free 5x7 photo.

WRITE A BOOK & GET IT PUBLISHED
Mon – Fri, June 16 – 20, 9:00a – 11:00a (kids ages 10-13)

For Kids ages 10-13
SPYT 139

This is a camp that is designed to teach kids how to tell a story. Throughout the camp, they will be read numerous children’s stories and then have time to develop their own characters and story plot. They will make the plot into a story. They will illustrate their book, design a cover, and even make an “about the author page.” They will have the opportunity to either take the paper book home bounded as they would like, or, for a small charge (usually under ten dollars) send it off to be published as a regular book (bound and printed by an actual publishing company). The book will arrive in the mail the week after the camp is over. Students will work on the book at camp and may take the book home to continue working on it. At the end of the week, they will have a book that they wrote. We will also spend the day reading children’s books and getting ideas. We will also explore, different types of books, characters, story plot and the terms associated with it, literary elements and how to get published!

Instructor: Lauren Wright – Ms. Wright is a teacher at West High and she loves teaching kids to write.

BABY SIGN LANGUAGE FOR BIG PEOPLE
Wednesdays, June 17-July 27,  3:00p – 5:00p (parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers)
$99 per person

No, this class isn’t actually for kids…but it’s for parents who want to teach their babies and toddler how to sign. This class will teach you basic communication signs to teach your baby.  Many people use sign language as a way to communicate with pre-verbal children.  As an added benefit you will also learn a brief history of American Sign Language and Deaf culture. And, you will have an opportunity to attend one activity with the Deaf community. (There is an accompanying CD, call for information.)

Instructor:  Cathy Copelandis MSUB’s Sign Language Interpreter who has a passion for teaching sign language and introducing people to the deaf culture.

BABYSITTING 101
West High School room 175
Tue – Fri, June 16 – 19, 1:00p – 4:00, (ages 11 – 14 year old)
$119 per camper (additional $15 fee for CPR training)

Babysitting is a fun and rewarding way to spend your extra time and earn a good wage. You will develop skills in the basics of child care and learn fun activities to do with kids. You will learn how to deal with basic emergency situations and develop a portfolio that will “wow” your clients and help you present you skills to parents. Camp includes American Red Cross CPR training and certificate.

Instructor: Jillian Miller has been working with teenagers as a family and consumer science teacher for 20 years. 

LIBRARY LOCK-IN
MSUB Main Campus (1500 University Drive, Library)
Fri - Sat, June 19 – 20, 6:00p – 9:00a (entering 4th – 6th grade)
$59 per camper

Join us for the 2nd annual Library Lock In. Enjoy an overnight stay at the Montana State University Billings Library. Ever wanted to be loud in a library and get locked inside overnight?  Then come join us for a night of fun. We will be watching movies in our personal movie theatre, eating popcorn and dots, play capture the flag in the library, a round or two of sardines, and don’t forget some outdoor tag games and our water balloon toss and race down the waterfall.  

We can’t go the night without Pizza. We will have some yummy muffins for breakfast – just enough sugar to keep you going the next day.  We will make sure we have plenty of snacks to make it through the night.

So, come and join us and sleep with the fishes – well maybe some of us will sleep.

Bring your sleeping bag and pillow and bring along your favorite nighttime snack to share with some new friends.

CSI:  CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION BILLINGS
Mon – Fri, June 22 - 26, 9:00a - noon (kids ages 9, 10 & 11)
$169 per Camper

This National award winning camp is one of our most popular!   In this camp you will solve mysteries using science. In a computer lab you will visit the FBI’s crime scene investigation website, you will do fingerprinting, plaster casting, collecting data and comparing, handwriting analysis, chromatography, tracking, fiber analysis, hair samples, blood drop analysis (we won’t use real blood!). Just like on TV, you will solve a real crime using science and your powers of deduction. Class size is limited so register early.

Instructor: National Awarding winner Carla Garner is a teacher at Graff Elementary who can’t wait for summer so she can teach camps!

BEGINNING SIGN LANGUAGE FOR KIDS
Mon – Fri, June 22 - 26, 9:00a - noon (kids ages 6, 7 & 8)
$99 per Camper

Kids love to sign. In this class you will learn how to use sign language for foods, colors, animals, sports and nouns and verbs. You will also learn how to sign some songs and fingerspell the letters of the alphabet. 

Instructor: Terry Wheeler has been teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students for the past 25 years. She works for School Dist II and LOVES teaching sign language to kids.

READING AND RUNNING FUN
Mon – Fri, June 22 - 24, 9:00a - noon (kids entering 2nd and 3rd grade)
$79 per Camper

In this three day camp kids will work on reading fluency and comprehension and other reading components. They will do this by reading several short stories that will be combined with activities so they are having so much fun they forget they are improving their reading skills. All reading skills learning will be enhanced by fun activities that include physical activity, team building, problem solving and critical thinking.

Instructor: J-nell Bermes is a special ed teacher in Billings who is a reading specialist. She has lots of ways to make reading a truly enjoyable experience for kids.

BOYS CONSTRUCTION CAMP
MSUB College of Technology, 3803 Central Ave, Room A117
Mon – Fri, June 22 - 26, 8:30a – 4:30p (Boys entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grades)
$149 per camper

You will learn to work with construction tools and be involved in the construction of a storage building from start to finish? You will learn about construction safety, how to use tools safely and how to build a floor system, wall system, and roof system. You will also learn how to roof, side and paint while building the storage building. Parents can drop off their children between 8:00 and 8:30 am. The fun will begin at 8:30 am and conclude at 4:30 each day. Parents can pick their children up between 4:30 and 5:00 pm! Some scholarships available. SO YOU THINK YOU’RE NOT CREATIVE?  REALLY?

You will discover creative talents you never knew you had and go home with some really cool things you made all by yourself!  Here are some of the projects you might work on… spa lotions and potions, notecards and journals, edible treats, tie dye, room decorations, gardening trinkets and so much more! For those who have taken the class before, there will be lots of new surprises! You will be able to take the skills you learn in this class to make many fun things for you, your family and your friends!

Instructors: Kim Petersen and Tiffany Parish are a team that has style, talent, creativity, and tons of energy that will bring out the creativity in you!

SPECTACULAR SPORTS CAMP

We will be learning about different sports such as football, soccer, and baseball. You will learn the basic skills of each as well as how the game is played including rules, how points are scored, how many players on each team and what their jobs are. After we learn the games, we get to play and create some game related projects. This camp is great for learning the basics of our most popular sports and more importantly you’ll learn how to be a team player.

Instructors: Holly Szillat and Katie Kuechler -  these two sisters know how to teach a camp. Holly is a graduate of MSUB, and Katie is working on her degree. Spending the summer teaching kids is their very favorite thing to do!

THE POWER OF ENERGY

Have you ever wondered how those gigantic wind turbines create power that turns on the lights in your house?  Or how scientists convert sunshine into electricity? Or how the water that runs through a dam or burning coal can be used to power your home computer? Have you ever seen a power grid for a major city? Did you know that you can make a battery using quarters and vinegar? Or that you can power your alarm clock using nails and lemons? Energy is a fascinating resource that touches every aspect of our daily lives…and there are new advances being made every day. You’ll learn about these things and much more in this camp that will introduce you to dozens of fascinating and ever changing careers in the field of Energy.  You’ll get to tour ExxonMobil, PPL Montana and the City of Billings water plant to see the high tech world of energy in action.

Instructor: Jim Hughs, COT Process Plant Instructor has an AAS in Chemistry from Eastern Montana College and a BAS from the University of Alabama in Applied Chemical Engineering. An Exxon Mobil employee for over 30 years, Jim worked in process operations, environmental permitting, laboratory systems, and process engineering.

SHOCKINGLY FUN

Shockingly fun experiments with electricity. Become an expert at making both series and parallel circuits and put them to work in fun contraptions. Get your hands on some fun electrical gadgets and explore how they work. Learn about electrical safety. The Mad Science program encourages children to explore different science concepts in a FUN, exciting, educational, & interactive format. The goal of this program is to spark your child’s imagination as they explore different science disciplines through hands-on experiments and exciting demonstrations.

ON THE MOVE:  MAKING THINGS THAT GO ON LAND & IN THE AIR
Mon-Fri, June 29– July 3, 9:00a – noon, (kids ages 8, 9, 10 & 11)
$169 per camper

Using toys to study physics of “things that go” in air and on land. Day l: Paper blimps and airplanes, Day 2: balsa planes, Day 3: bottle rockets, Day 4: balloon powered cars, Day 5: perfecting final models (based on data collection of trials for vehicles in days 1-4) and RACES!! You’ll build things, launch things, race things, make things fly. This class is full of surprises…and you just never know what might get dropped out of the sky!  Seriously!

Instructor: Carla Garner…yes it’s true…she knows how to build a rocket, an airplane and a balloon powered car….she just might be a genius.
