Study English Year Round

 

 

The Accelerated Summer ESL Program at MSU Billings offers a three-week intensive summer session for students ages 15 and older.

Our summer program combines formal classroom instruction with family homestays group activities to improve English language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of American culture. 

Program Offerings

  • 16 hours per week of intensive classroom English

  • Small classes and personalized instruction

  • Specialized courses: Conversational English, Grammar and Usage, Composition and American History & Culture

Program Setting

msubillings campusMontana State University-Billings is located in the expanding city of Billings in the valley of the winding Yellowstone between rugged mountains and sweeping plains. The campus is within walking distance of local shopping centers, restaurants, theaters, and hospitals.

Billings is a city of 100,000, serves as a commercial, medical, and agricultural center. Billings is a safe, clean, and affordable community.

Program Cost

The cost of the program is US $1,800 and includes housing, most meals, tuition, books and classroom materials, most activity fees, and transportation to and from the airport. Optional activities such as golfing and canoeing each may require an additional fee.

Airfare, health insurance, and spending money are the responsibility of the students. Please be sure to bring sufficient funds to cover these expenses. We recommend the use of traveler's checks in US dollars.

Application Requirements and Fee Payment Schedule

Applicants must have a 350-400 paper-based TOEFL score to enter the program. Applications must be received by May 31. Applications received after May 31 will be processed on a space available basis. The balance of funds is due by June 15. Balances postmarked after June 15th must include an additional US $250 late payment fee.

A refund, due to a cancellation before June 15, will be issued for all of the paid fees. A cancellation after June 15th will receive a refund of 50% of the paid fees. We must receive notification of cancellation in writing.

Cultural and Recreational Activities

The ESL Summer Program offers a rich selection of cultural and recreational activities as well as opportunities to make American friends. Whether eating hamburgers at a backyard barbeque or watching the Billings Mustangs play baseball, we aim to give the students the full experience of American life.

Besides outings to local museums and theaters, students can enjoy a number of optional outdoor activities, such as horseback riding, river rafting, hiking, fishing, and golf.

Billings hosts a number of events in the summer, including concerts and plays, western rodeos that feature bronco riding and steer roping, Montana Fair and the Big Sky State Games, an Olympic-style competition for Montana athletes. A number of cultural events, such as Crow Fair (Native American Fair) and the Festival of Nations, introduce students to the state's diverse cultural heritage. At Crow Fair, the world's largest teepee encampment. Students can see powwow (Native American dance and drums) and visit one of the teepees. Students can explore some of the historical sites of the area, such as Pompey's Pillar.

The program features a weekend tour through Yellowstone National Park, where students can explore the natural wonders of the park and watch free-roaming bison, elk and moose.
