Montana State University Billings is the third largest University in Montana and is located in Montana’s largest city.  The Senior campus, College of Technology and Downtown campus together are home to approximately 5,000 students.  The University has six colleges, which offer a wide variety of degree programs to its students.  Montana State University Billings employs approximately 500 employees, who together work hard to create an outstanding University.

Department Description:  Financial Services is responsible for accounting and financial reporting, payroll, grants and contract management, internal campus recharges, property management, and cash and investment management. 

Position Description:  The Payroll Tech III assists in the processing and preparation of a biweekly payroll for approximately 1000 full time and part time employees.  Duties include distributing, collecting, reviewing, coding and entering timesheets; processing biweekly vendor payments and reports; accounting and reconciliation of funds; processing payroll adjustments; maintaining employee and reporting files; researching questions and verifying information; employment verifications; web reporting and database; and customer service duties including reception and answering phone.

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ø High school graduate or equivalent

Ø Minimum of two years full time relevant payroll and or accounting experience

Ø Proficiency and experience with computer based applications for word processing, spreadsheets, email and web based reporting

Ø Demonstrated knowledge of office methods and procedures

Ø Strong problem solving, research and analytical skills

Ø Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ø Knowledge of payroll regulations and or demonstrated experience with preparing journal entries and payments, vendor payments, reporting and reconciliations

Ø Excellent customer service and communication skills, including the ability to explain and communicate detailed information, both verbally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and other agencies and departments

Ø Experience with organizing and prioritizing simultaneous work assignments and meeting deadlines while maintaining a positive, effective and professional approach

Ø Ability to consistently exercise self-motivation and work effectively both independently and in a team oriented manner, under minimal supervision

Ø Ability to perform tasks with high degree of accuracy and close attention to detail 

Ø A skills test may be given

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ø Demonstrated progressive working experience in complex, electronic payroll preparation and reporting

Ø Experience researching and applying federal, state, and local rules and regulations including Fair Labor Standards and collective bargaining agreements

Ø Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Ø Experience with Banner software system
