Montana State University Billings is the third largest University in Montana and is located in Montana’s largest city.  The Senior campus, College of Technology and Downtown campus together are home to approximately 5,000 students.  The University has six colleges, which offer a wide variety of degree programs to its students.  Montana State University Billings employs approximately 500 employees, who together work hard to create an outstanding University.

MSU Billings Athletics:  MSUB is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and competes at the NCAA Division II level with men’s and women’s varsity teams in basketball, soccer, cross country, tennis, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field plus women’s volleyball, women’s softball, and men’s baseball (17 sports) plus co-educational cheerleading.

The Head Men’s Basketball Coach reports to the Athletic Director and is responsible for planning and administering all aspects of the men’s varsity basketball program, under the direction of the Athletic Director, including:

• recruiting and retaining qualified student-athletes;
• building and maintaining a competitive, high quality NCAA Division II men’s basketball program;
• coaching and supervising the men’s basketball team during scheduled practices, games, and other events;
• making schedule recommendations to the Athletic Director;
• maintaining responsibility for expense control compliance with all basketball program expenditures;
• mentoring student-athletes in their academic performance to assure academic success and timely progress toward degree completion;
• directing the men’s basketball program within all NCAA and conference rules and regulations as well as all state, university, and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations;
• developing strategies to motivate maximum level of individual and team athletic performance;
• developing strategies to ensure the appropriate personal and social conduct on- and off-campus of the men’s basketball student-athletes as well as the coaches;
• developing strategies to ensure the establishment of a safe environment for the student-athletes under the head coach’s supervision, including but not limited to education on and methods for discussing and resolving harassment or discrimination;
• planning team travel schedule and arrangements in conjunction with the Athletic Director;
• promoting the athletic program both on-campus and off-campus;
• fund-raising within the community, coordinated with the Athletic Director;
• planning and conducting basketball camps, clinics, tournaments, and other special events;
• actively participating in and contributing professionally to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, university programs and events, and the community;
• establishing and maintaining an active Yellowjacket Men’s Basketball Booster Club (under the umbrella of the Yellowjacket Athletic Association);
• teaching university course(s) within an academic discipline (optional); and
• fulfilling other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred) from an accredited college or university;
• successful record of proven coaching ability;
• ability to recruit and retain qualified student-athletes and to facilitate timely progress toward graduation;
• effective oral and written communication skills;
• thorough knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations;
• sound human relations skills in dealing with student-athletes, university personnel, corporate sponsors, boosters, alumni, and members of the off-campus community;
• appropriate credentials and ability related to university teaching preferred;
• ability to operate an intercollegiate basketball program within budget parameters; and
• ability to raise funds within the community.
