                                         Campus Corps

                                          Team Leader

 

The Office for Community Involvement at MSU Billings strives to connect the campus and Billings community together by providing opportunities for students, faculty and staff members to participate in volunteer activities and projects. 

 

The Campus Corps Team Leader is a vital member of our office staff.  He/she will be responsible for building relationships with the team members, campus-based supervisor, and a variety of community organizations while working to increase the spirit of volunteerism on the MSU Billings campus.  The Team Leader will also work to raise awareness of services and opportunities available, provide support and assistance to team members, monitor members’ progress toward meeting Campus Corps and Office for Community Involvement objectives, and assist the campus-based supervisor in additional ways, among other responsibilities, as listed below.

 

Responsibilities

 

Coordination: 

·         Organize and facilitate bi-monthly team meetings (develop agendas, facilitate group activities, etc.) and weekly one-on-one meetings with each member

·         Coordinate logistics for group travel to state-wide Campus Corps trainings (Building Engaged Citizens, Student Training Institute, All-Member Gathering)

·         Coordinate the MTCC staff campus visits to MSU Billings (Fall and Spring semesters)

·         Coordinate opportunities for team building and socializing outside of work hours (1 per month)

·         Coordinate one team service project per semester

·         Coordinate Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony and Day of Service

·         Coordinate the MSU Billings Relay for Life team activities and fundraisers in conjunction with other Office for Community Involvement staff members and team members (MSU B faculty and staff members and their families/friends)

·         Coordinate Family Services’ Back to School Drive (Summer 2007)

·         Assist OCI director and the MSU B Campus-based Supervisor with the coordination of staff training at the beginning of both semesters

·         Coordinate the schedule for Service Saturdays, and assist student organizations with logistics.  During Spring Semester, this will include recruiting student groups/organizations for the following school year’s Service Saturdays.

 

Member Development and Project Support:

·         Connect team members to other campuses/offices working on similar projects

·         Assist members with quarterly progress reports, timesheets, citizenship development reporting, and project surveys

·         Provide training/technical assistance to team members in conjunction with the Campus-based Supervisor and OCI Director

·         Ensure reflection opportunities are offered

·         Assist team members with career development

·         Identify community resources to assist team members

·         Monitor team dynamics and conflicts

·         Offer support, encouragement, and guidance to team members

·         Implement FISH philosophy

·         Visit the members’ sites twice per month and participate in their projects on a regular basis

 

Volunteering:

·         Team Leader may spend up to 30% (but not over 30%) of their hours in direct service to one agency (must be approved by Montana Campus Compact and the Campus-based Supervisor).  Because the Office for Community Involvement collaborates frequently with the United Way, we recommend that you pick a United Way- registered agency. 

 

Other Duties:

·         Communicate regularly with Campus-based supervisor for advice, support, and direction

·         Provide input, feedback, and strategy for upcoming projects

·         Work to develop community partnerships and strengthen systems for engaging volunteers (i.e. Volunteer Administrator’s Network of Billings)

·         Assist members with record keeping of projects (i.e. binders, pictures, disks)

·         Assist with various Office for Community Involvement programs

·         Assist with hiring the 2008-2009 Campus Corps Team

·         Assist the Campus-based supervisor with another MTCC program, Students in Service.  This could include data entry, assisting with orientation/enrollment sessions, and/or recruiting new programs to participate.

 

Time Commitment:

·         The Team Leader position is a full-time position:

§         60% of each week’s hours are dedicated to member support

§         Up to 30% of each week’s hours are allocated for direct service at a local, non-profit agency

§         Remaining hours are flexible, and are usually spent assisting the staff on OCI projects

 

Member Development:

·         Must attend all training sessions, orientations, and service activities required by Montana Campus Compact:

 

§         Team Leader and Supervisor training: early September 2008

§         Building Engaged Citizens training: late September 2008

§         All-Member Gathering: February 2009

§         Spring Training Institute: April 2009

§         Additional Team Leader trainings and monthly conference calls (TBA)

§         Participation in National Service Days’ volunteer projects (usually 3/year: National Family Volunteer Day, MLK Day of Service, National Youth Service Day)

§         Other campus/community events may require your participation (Office for Community Involvement’s Trick or Eat on Halloween is an example)

·         Develop personal and professional goals in conjunction with the AmeriCorps Citizenship Competencies.

 

 Qualifications

Required

§         Must be available to work 35-40 hours/week

§         Must not be an undergraduate student (recent college graduates or graduate students are encouraged to apply)

§         Must be a U.S. citizen or have appropriate documentation of immigration.

§         Must demonstrate community service leadership potential in the application.

§         Must make a one-year commitment to the program serving a minimum of 1700 total hours

§         Must be organized and have the ability to perform multiple tasks while meeting all required deadlines.

§         Must be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and work as part of a team.

§         Ability to work with college students, faculty and staff, and professionals in the community.

§         Strong commitment to Montana Campus Compact, MSU Billings, and getting students connected to volunteer opportunities.

§         Solid verbal and written communication skills (ability to give presentations, to write formal business letters, to process reports, etc.).

§         IBM/PC Proficient; working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher.

§         Must have access to reliable transportation; some driving may be required. 

§         Ability to dress professionally on- and off-campus and to represent the university in a positive manner.

§         Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed.

§         Ability/willingness to lead a Campus Corps team of student workers (6)

 


 

Benefits

§         You will be paid an annual living allowance of $11,400.

§         Health insurance and loan forbearance are added benefits.

§         Upon successful completion of 1700 hours of service over the one-year term, you will be eligible to receive an Educational Award in the sum of $4,725 to either repay student loans or to further one’s education (i.e. graduate school).  The award must be used within a seven year period and is non-transferable.  Please note that the award is considered taxable income in the year the award is used.

§         All materials, equipment, and supplies in the Office for Community Involvement, Housing Office, Student Union Office, and workroom are at your disposal for use in accomplishing your job responsibilities.
