MSUB responds to H1N1

Everyone
""
Avoid close contact: Avoid close contact with other individuals who may be sick.
""
Practice "self-isolation": If you are sick (fever over 100, cough, aches, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting) experts recommend you stay at home.
""
Cover your mouth and nose: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
""
Clean your hands: Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Use a hand sanitizer--located around the university--as much as possible.
""
Keep your hands away from your face: Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth to avoid catching" a cold or flu. This is how germs usually enter your body.
""
Clean your personal space: Cleaning your work and living area (doorknobs, cabinet handles, etc.) with a bleach-based cleaner will help prevent the spread of germs.

Practice "self-isolation": If you are sick (fever over 100, cough, aches, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting) experts recommend you stay at home or in your room until you are fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours.
""
Be diligent: Don't share personal items such as lipstick, towels, razors or eating utensils.
""
Stay in touch: Keep in contact with your parents and your professors so they know how you are doing.

""

This is no joke: You are urged to not use H1N1 as an excuse to avoid completing your academic responsibilities. You should also refrain from making jokes or comments about H1N1 on social networking sites.

Faculty & Staff
""
Practice "self-isolation": If you are sick (fever over 100, cough, aches, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting) experts recommend you stay at home until you are fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours.
""
Stay in touch: Keep in contact with your dean, department chair or immediate supervisor regarding class scheduling issues or absentee policies that affect you.
""
Be aware: Faculty are routinely in the best position to communicate to students the need for staying home when ill in order to limit spread of the virus. This is also true for staff and other students.
""
Above all, don't panic.

Novel H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu”) is a new influenza virus. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus spreads from person-to-person in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

At MSU Billings, we are keeping abreast of developments of this important issue and will be following best-case recommendations from the CDC and the United Health Command here in Billings when the flu hits our population. The expected wide-spread incidence of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus is of major concern to everyone in the health care and education arenas.

We are being proactive and will be encouraging you to follow the guidelines listed on this page. As part of the greater Billings community, it is incumbent on us to work collaboratively with local experts to help guide our actions and decisions.

Visit the Center for Disease Control web site to find additional information and recommendations for schools.
