Alumni Donate $100,000 to MSU Billings

""Dave (’72) and Roxie Spildie (’80) Warne, both MSU Billings alumni, have pledged $100,000 over five years to Montana State University-Billings’ People, Pride & Promise campaign.  Appreciating the education they received at MSU Billings, the Warne’s designated their gift for endowed scholarships in education. “It’s nice to be able to give something back to an institution that meant so much to both Roxie and me,” said Dave Warne.  “Students face a greater challenge financially now than when we attended college, so it is important to be able to help deserving students attain the dream of a college education.”

Both Warnes have strong ties to MSU Billings and to teaching.  Dave’s father, Dr. Earl Warne, was a long-term faculty member in the Department of Education.  Dr. Warne taught for 28 years at MSU Billings and is now a professor emeritus.  In addition, Dave’s mother, Harriet, and Roxie’s mother, Shirley Spildie, graduated from EMC with degrees in education and taught in Billings

Born in Helena and raised in Billings, Roxie (Spildie) Warne graduated from MSU Billings with degrees in elementary and special education.  At graduation she was named Outstanding Senior in Elementary Education.  Roxie started her tenure with School District #2 in special education.  Several of those first years were spent in a special education classroom in the new education building on the MSU Billings’ campus.  The last thirteen years have been spent with first grade which she is currently teaching at Miles Avenue Elementary.  Roxie feels strongly about the reason she teaches, “The ultimate reward is knowing that you have touched the lives of children in a positive way.”

Dave, an English major and math minor, graduated from the University with a B.S. in Education.  He was named as an Outstanding Senior.  Following graduation, he taught English and coached competitive speech for eight years at both Billings West and Billings Senior High.  Presently, he is the Branch Manager for the Billings office of Brenntag Pacific.  Dave also currently serves as a member of the MSU Billings Foundation Board of Trustees.

The Warne’s have two grown children: Tyler who is a partner in a ski shop and Rachael who is a sophomore in college.
