Growing Opportunities for Nonprofit Leaders opportunity in nonprofit

A recent news release from the National Education Advisory Board (EAB) highlights a recent study by the Collegiate Employment Research Institute (CERI) that identified the industries hiring the most new graduates in 2017.  The industries that traditionally hire the most new graduates and the percentage increase of positions at the bachelor’s degree level from last year are as follows: 

  • Nonprofits, +23% 

  • Agriculture, +21% 

  • Finance and Insurance, +18% 

  • Professional, Business, and Scientific Services, +18% 

  • Manufacturing, +17% 

  • Transportation, +15% 

  • Information Service, +14% 

  • Arts and Entertainment, +14% 

  • Retail Trade, +6% 

  • Educational Services, +6% 


New graduates joining nonprofits will find themselves working for organizations facing many challenges including: uncertain funding, increased demand for servicesmanaging staff turnover, and changing rules and regulations. There are excellent benefits ranging from personal satisfaction received from making a difference to faster career development opportunities for those looking to get ahead quickly.  In fact, a recent survey of nonprofits found a 20% annual turnover in executive leadership positions highlighting the opportunity for new nonprofit mangers to grow and advance in their position and eventually into a nonprofit executive leadership role.   


Leading a nonprofit requires specialized skills and knowledge and MSU Billings has worked with local nonprofit leaders to develop Survival Skills for Nonprofit Leaders program. This short-term low impact training is designed to assist individuals acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective nonprofit manager. Instructors include university faculty along with faculty practitioners from nonprofit organizations. The course is open to all individuals looking to transition into the nonprofit community or advance in nonprofit organizations.     


The course requires just one afternoon a month for 5 months and course topics include Management and Leadership, Human Resource Basics, Financial Management and Budgeting, Communications in Nonprofit Settings, Fundraising and Advocacy.
