Tribute Poetry:  Chief Plenty Coups with the Alberta Bair Theater
This course offers teachers effective, easy-to-follow pre-writing, writing, and basic performance poetry activities that will enhance student writing and literary comprehension.  In addition to the brainstorming techniques, metaphor and simile exercises that stimulate vocabulary options will be explored.  These activities facilitate the process of effective and expressive original poetry composition.  Activities will include the formation of “Praise Poetry” and “Tribute Poetry”, along with numerous individual and group exercises. The theme for Summer Institute 2012 is the legend of Chief Plenty Coups.  This course is recommended for teachers and administrators (grades 3-8) including classroom, visual art, language arts, social studies and history teacher.

The course will provide background information on the importance of phonics and writing for students or children working at home on becoming effective readers and writers.  The course will provide opportunities to learn the phonics rules, make materials to enhance the children’s success, incorporate writing using children’s independent reading levels and give time to make samples of the writing projects for the writing portfolios. I Laughed Till I Cried:  Using Adventure Programming to Enhance Learning
This workshop is designed to be an active participation workshop featuring creative and innovative games for individuals ranging from 5 to 75 years of age and for various groups ranging from school to church and beyond. A wide variety of ice-breakers, warm-up activities, de-inhibitizers, cooperative games, trust activities and problem solving initiatives will be presented as well as low rope activities. Activities and variations of how learning occurs in teamwork settings will be introduced and performed. Activities presented are designed to help develop self-esteem, trust, cooperation, and independent thinking. Many of the activities can be adapted to help teach other academic subject areas such as math, science, geography, and health.  No required text.

A workshop for teachers, school counselors and administrators who wish to be or who are currently involved in school based programs designed to prevent drug abuse or to intervene on troubled youth.  Assured of a varied and high-impact learning experience, participants will attend lectures, films, therapeutic programs, and multi-disciplinary clinical case conferences to learn about:

  • chemical dependency
  • co-dependency
  • compulsive gambling
  • eating disorders
  • dual diagnosis
  • sexual addiction
  • essential symptoms of  addiction
  • progressive stages
  • high-risk youth
  • intervention and referral
  • applying this knowledge in school settings
  • effective strategies in working with youth, parents and referral resources

Upon completion of this ServSafe workshop and successfully passing the exam, participants will have met the requirements for certification in ServSafe from the National Restaurant Association.
COURSE CONTENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course, participants will be able to demonstrate and utilize the concepts learned about safe food handling.  This will enable them to model these concepts in their classroom.  They will learn about food-borne illnesses and ways to prevent the transfer of disease in regards to food handling, storage, and preparation.

Community Master Naturalist – Billings
A field-oriented community class providing a wide-ranging, working knowledge of the natural history in and surrounding Billings, Montana. Topics include naturalist skills, landscape interpretation, and detail-oriented understanding of local plant and animal species.  Special supplies are needed for this experience.  Please see syllabus for details.

2012 MCCE Summer Tech Summit
This is a three-day technology conference focusing on emerging technology and technology integration. Teachers will have the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops throughout the three-day conference presented by classroom teachers who successfully integrate technology into their classroom activities. The workshops will range in difficulty so beginning computer-users to advanced computer-users will find valuable sessions. All sessions model 21st century teaching and apply the NETS (National Education Technology Standards).  The objective of this conference is to provide Montana teachers with an opportunity to explore different emerging technologies as presented by an experienced user and educator. Hands-on and presentation style workshops will allow teachers to experiment and explore in a safe environment. Actual classroom lessons will be illustrated and attendees will have time to work on creating a lesson that effectively integrates technology.  No required text.

Using the iPad as a Tool for Teaching
The iPad tablet is a great tool that can be used in the classroom for visual communications. This class will unlock some secrets of the iPad and help put you on the level of your technologically advanced students. Use the iPad with your projector or television instead of a white board. Add video to the mix of a daily lecture to keep your students excited about learning. Quickly and seamlessly switch from writing an outline to showing a website in one click or swipe. The iPad can be held in your hand while you teach to allow you interaction with the students.

iMovie & Photoshop Touch    
iMovie and Photoshop Touch on your iPad, any generation will be fine: U=unlock the secrets of your new iPad HD. Learn how to use iMovie on your new iPad to produce short movies. The instructor, David Grubbs, photographer for the Billings Gazette uses iMovie on a daily basis to edit movies for the Billings Gazette.com website. David will teach you how to use this simple program to put together attractive movies of family gatherings or vacation footage in a fast and simple way. Sometimes these programs can be frustrating to try and learn on your own but this class will give you quick workflow ideas to put you at ease in making movies on your own. Shooting video with your iPad and iPhone and point and shoot cameras will a big part of the class. Next will be importing the videos into the iPad and stitching the video and audio together to make quick and simple movies. Impress your family members with a short video of the last vacation or build a quick movie for a work project in a snap. Classes will be Saturdays, all day. The classes will be held when there is events downtown like Farmers Markets and other small festivals. The students will use these events to shoot video and then bring what they shot into the classroom and edit it into a movie on their iPads. The instructor recommends all students have an iPads with them in class although not required.
