Data, Data, Everywhere! What’s A Teacher To Do?
MSUB College of Education, Room 122

Data, data, everywhere! What’s a teacher to do? If you feel like you are inundated with data and need a lifeline, this is the workshop for you. Participants in this training will explore the various types of achievement data that are available to educators including standardized tests, individual tests of academic achievement used in Special Education evaluations, and curriculum-based measures like AIMSweb and DIBELS. Participants will learn what these tests are and how they are the same and how they differ. Participants will also learn where informal testing, such as curriculum chapter tests, and mastery tests fit in. Every test administered gives some sort of number; some give several numbers related to the same thing. Participants will learn how to recognize different kinds of scores and how to interpret what they mean. Armed with an understanding of what the numbers mean, participants will explore how to use data to make decisions about student’s needs and about the effectiveness of instruction. Opportunities for applied practice will be integrated throughout the presentation.

Tourette Syndrome Featured Speaker Luncheon
February 11, 2010

A child with Tourette Syndrome in the classroom may bear the outward appearance of a child with behavior problems: defiant, stubborn, emitting sounds, displaying unusual physical mannerisms, unwilling to cooperate. He may be disciplined for things he cannot control and given low grades for things he cannot accomplish. He is probably teased and sometimes imitated by other students. (National Tourette Syndrome Association: http://tsa-usa.org/index.html). In this presentation, Dr. James Peak, MD, talks about the rewards and challenges of working with children who have Tourette Syndrome and discusses strategies that can be used both at school and home.

Sponsored by Lorman Education Services
September 30, 2010 11:00AM – 12:30PM Central Time Zone

We will compare symptoms, discuss the perils of misdiagnosis and attempt to understand why the vast majority of these children and teens are initially misdiagnosed, and what improper treatment can cause. Co-morbidity is the rule, not the exception. We will discuss educational needs and why a 504 or IEP is often crucial for a child's success. This teleconference will also address the different qualifications for services through regional centers in California and their sister organizations throughout the country.

State of Research on Potential Environmental Health Factors with Autism and Related Neurodevelopment Disorders
Subcommittee on Children’s Health Hearing: US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works
Archived webinar: August 3, 2010

Autism and related developmental disorders affect approximately 1 in 110 births and are growing at an alarming rate of 10 to 17 percent per year. At this rate, there are estimates that the prevalence of autism could reach 4 million Americans in the next decade. Autism and similar disorders have no ethnic, racial, or social boundaries and can affect any family or child indiscriminately. Autism has increasingly been identified as a mostly complex genetic disorder, but some environmental factors may also be linked to its causes. This hearing looks at the latest research on potential environmental factors that may harm the health of children -- including their ability to think, learn, and interact with families and other people in society.
