Technology Tuesday: SMART and Promethean Boards

MSUB College of Education Building
Room 160

Is your whiteboard frustrating you? Are you merely using it to show videos or project? Do you want to learn how to get your students out of their chair and up to the board? Do you know how to use your tool bar, find lessons, import data, imbed videos? These are a few of the topics Trina will be reviewing for February's Tech Tuesday. If possible, please download Active Inspire or Notebook software on your computer before attending this session. If you have specific questions you would like answered during the presentation, please email requests to THalama@fromberg.k12.mt.us

Active Inspire is a software that comes with the purchase of Promethean boards. It has several features; including dual user, recording voice and screen, link capabilities to videos etc, to name a few. Notebook software is typically used for smart boards. It too has several features that bring the classroom to life. Inspire can be used on smart boards with minute differences in user capabilities. Whiteboards are a great way to get your classroom interactive. Trina has several management tools, cool tools, and templates that she will  share with you.

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) for Early Childhood Educators
Session 2 of 2
MSUB College of Education Building
Room 122

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) for Early Childhood Educators is a supplemental LETRS module based on a growing body of research that says the more children know about language and literacy before they begin formal schooling, the better equipped they are to succeed in reading. This two session presentation describes the  scope and sequence of the module, helping preschool and kindergarten teachers to deepen their understanding of early literacy and enhance their strategies to help young children develop the foundation skills needed for learning to read and write.

Early Childhood LETRS is appropriate for early childhood educators working with preschool and kindergarten children as well as early elementary children experiencing difficulty with the literacy process. It is also appropriate for early care and education providers who are interested in enhancing their own interactions with the children in their care.

Featured Speaker Luncheon: Recognizing and Supporting Students with Oppositional Defiant Disorder
MSUB Student Union Building, Lewis and Clark Room

Increasingly faced with students who present very challenging behavioral issues, most school staff have not been trained as treatment providers, but as educators. Punitive and reactive strategies are often the response of choice, in spite of the frequent negative side effects and drawbacks of such approaches. We will take a look at another approach to classroom management of oppositional and defiant students.

State of Research on Potential Environmental Health Factors with Autism and Related Neurodevelopment Disorders
Subcommittee on Children’s Health Hearing: US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works
Archived webinar: August 3, 2010

Autism and related developmental disorders affect approximately 1 in 110 births and are growing at an alarming rate of 10 to 17 percent per year. At this rate, there are estimates that the prevalence of autism could reach 4 million Americans in the next decade. Autism and similar disorders have no ethnic, racial, or social boundaries and can affect any family or child indiscriminately. Autism has increasingly been identified as a mostly complex genetic disorder, but some environmental factors may also be linked to its causes. This hearing looks at the latest research on potential environmental factors that may harm the health of children -- including their ability to think, learn, and interact with families and other people in society.
