Paraeducator of the Year Award

Kelle Coughlin
Custer Schools

Kelle’s compassion for others is evident in the way she takes her students under her wing; she nurtures and inspires her charges to overcome issues such as low self-worth and confidence. Kelle supports and encourages her students outside of the classroom as well. Kelle can be seen in the stands cheering them on, whether they are playing ball or performing with the band and choir. She has gone so far as to buy dress clothes and ball shoes so one of her students could participate in the basketball program and travel with the team.

Paraprofessional/Teacher Team of the Year
Belinda Sheely (Paraprofessional) and Anna Meadows (Teacher)
Joliet Elementary School

Anna and Belinda have taken on the challenge of not only educating our special needs blind student but leading our entire staff and student body down the tricky path between helping and compassion and creating independence. Anna assists in presentations to the staff regarding unique learning and travel skills for students who are blind and Belinda has committed to learning Braille and becoming Braille certified on her own time.

Yes I Can! Award Winner / Athletics Category

Brenda Thom
Category: Academics/Self Advocacy

Throughout her school career, Brenda has shown self-determination; she has actively searched for accommodations that will support her academic success. When the school purchased a WYNN screen reader, Brenda set up the scanner and speakers and installed the software. Brenda used the screen reader on a daily basis, coming in before school and after school to scan in her text books. When other students needed to use the software, Brenda volunteered her time to train and support them.
