ACTION ITEMS NEEDED!

We depend on lots of items to fund many of our activities.  Items donated in the past include books, posters, photographs, crafts, homemade brew, artifact reproductions, etc.  So bring your items to the auction room by 6:30 and help make our 50th meeting a success!

SATURDAY, APRIL 19

Meeting Papers (Elks Lodge):  The meeting features a full day of presentations on Saturday, April 19, from 8:30 to 4:00 at the Elks Lodge.  Papers will be 20 minutes in length and cover a wide range of topics about Montana archaeology.

LAST CALL FOR PAPERS-ABSTRACTS NEEDED!

Abstracts will be accepted until April 4, 2008.  Students are strongly encouraged to give papers.  People interested in presenting a paper at the meeting should send a topic, abstract, and short presenter biography to: Becky Kallevig, 406 10th Ave SW, Sidney, Montana 59270, or e-mail your abstract to bkallevig@sidneyps.com or homested@midrivers.com

Banquet and Speaker (Elks Lodge):  An evening banquet will be held on Saturday, April 19, from 7:00 to 8:30 at the Elks Lodge.  The cost of the meal is $25.00.  There will be a no-host cocktail from 6:30 to 8:30.  Following the banquet will be our keynote address, given by Craig Lee.  A native of Bozeman, Montana, he recently obtained his PhD from the University of Colorado-Boulder.  His topic will address recent finds in alpine archaeology.

As a result of global warming, unique archeological sites and paleontological specimens are being discovered in association with melting snow and ice features around the world, including in the Rocky Mountains.  Research sponsored by the University of Colorado, USDA Forest Service, and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming is producing unprecedented insight into prehistoric hunter-gatherer adaptations in high elevation (tree line and above) environments through the recovery and analysis of rare organic artifacts, including atlatl darts and foreshafts.  Once exposed, these incredibly fragile and rare artifacts quickly rot and/or are in danger of theft.  The presentation will describe the development of the field of “ice patch archeology,” present new discoveries and outline a strategy for the future protection and study of these resources.

SUNDAY, APRIL 20

Field Trip: A field trip is scheduled for Sunday morning, April 20 from 8:30 to 12:30.  We will meet at the BLM office at 5001 Southgate Drive.  From there we will travel to Castle Butte, located approximately 40 miles east of Billings.  The place was chosen because of its relatively easy access by car.  Ethnoscience will provide space for six people if you do not have access to a vehicle or wish to carpool.

Castle Butte is one of the premier rock art sites of the Northwestern Plains.  Information from the site has been used by a number of prominent rock art investigators in constructing and debating an understanding of the sequence of regional rock art styles in use on the Northwestern Plains and elsewhere on the High Plains from Alberta to Texas, particularly for the early historic period.  The quality, quantity, and concentration of rock art, as well as the potential for relative and absolute dating, make this site more than locally significant.
