What’s New at the MSUB COT/Summer 2011

World Trade Center Memorial Planned

September 11, 2001 changed us and the course of history forever. Like the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, it brought war to our doorstep and made us more aware of our responsibilities as American citizens. It also showed us how communities can come together in time of need and how everyday heroes emerge when called upon. These are the lessons that the Montana State University Billings World Trade Center Task Force aims to preserve and impart to the following generations.

On February 11, 2011, a piece of history—a 6.5 by 3 feet I-beam from the debris of the World Trade Center—was awarded to the College of Technology. There are only 1,200 recipients worldwide. Among the few west of the Mississippi, this is the only one in Montana. The piece of burnt and twisted steel will be the centerpiece of a memorial to be built on the MSU Billings College of Technology campus.

The 9/11 Memorial will have three goals: to commemorate, dedicate and educate. First, it will commemorate those who perished on that day as well those who gave their lives fighting the global war on terrorism during the following years. Second, it aims to inspire young people in the University and the community at large to dedicate themselves to the values of patriotism and civic engagement. The third goal will be achieved through ongoing work by educators and administrators on all levels when they use the Memorial as a symbol and a tool to teach the importance of remembering our history and using that knowledge to serve our community and our nation.  The dedication and memorial will take place Sunday, September 11, 2011, at 10:30am in the front of the Health Sciences Building on the MSU Billings west campus. All Montanans are invited to participate and commemorate.
