AHUS 100 Introduction to Ultrasound

Introduces the student to the profession of sonography and the role of the sonographer.  Emphasis on medical terminology, ethical/legal aspects, written and verbal communication, and professional issues relating to registry, accreditation, professional organizations, and history of the profession.

 

AHUS 101 Ultrasound Instrumentation

3 cr.  (3 lec/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisites:  AHUS 100, AHUS 102, AHUS 104.  Offered ONLY Online.  (F)

Introduces students to ultrasound equipment operation.  Topics include ultrasound wave generation and propagation, transducers, pulse echo instruments, pulse echo imaging, image storage and display, Doppler, artifacts, quality assurance, bioeffects, and safety.

 

AHUS 102 Abdominal Sonography

3 cr.  (3 lec/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisites:  AHUS 100, AHUS 101, AHUS 104.  Offered ONLY Online.  (F)

Introduces students to an in-depth study of anatomy, physiology, and spatial relationships of the abdomen, retroperitoneal cavity, and superficial structures.  Emphasis will be placed on related clinical signs and symptoms, and normal and abnormal sonographic patterns.  Harmonic imaging and two-dimensional Doppler color imaging will be used to evaluate the sonographic appearance of abdominal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, spleen, pancreas, great vessels, kidneys, and urinary tract.

 

AHUS 103 Obstetrical (OB) and Gynecologic (GN) Sonography

3 cr.  (3 lec/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisites:  AHUS 105, AHUS 106.  Offered ONLY Online.  (Sp)

Introduces students to OB/GYN sonography and the female reproductive and urogenital systems as they pertain to performing ultrasound examinations of that area.  Normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology, instrumentation set-up, patient preparation, proper scanning technique, and normal and abnormal findings are presented.


AHUS 104 Clinical Experience I

4 cr.  (12 clinical/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisites:  AHUS 100, AHUS 101, AHUS 102.  (F)

Instructs students in the hands-on scanning of patients via ultrasonography at clinical sites.  Students will obtain hands-on clinical experience performing ultrasound examinations under the direct supervision of the clinical instructor or certified ultrasonographer.

 

AHUS 105 Clinical Experience II

4 cr.  (12 clinical/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisites:  AHUS 103, AHUS 106.  (Sp)

Instructs students in the hands-on scanning of patients via ultrasonography at clinical sites.  Students will obtain hands-on clinical experience performing ultrasound examinations under the direct supervision of the clinical instructor or certified ultrasonographer.

 

AHUS 106 Sectional Anatomy

3 cr.  (3 lec/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisites:  AHUS 103, AHUS 105.  Offered ONLY Online.  (Sp)

Introduces students to sectional anatomy in the transverse, longitudinal, and coronal planes, with emphasis on the organs of sonographic interest within the abdomino-pelvic cavity.

 

AHUS 107 Ultrasound Physics

3 cr.  (3 lec/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisite:  AHUS 108.  Offered ONLY Online.  (Su)

Introduces students to the physical principles of diagnostic medical sonography.  Topics include the characteristics of real-time ultrasound transducers, the ultrasound beam, and the ultrasound instrumentation.

 

AHUS 108 Clinical Experience III

4 cr.  (12 clinical/wk)  Prerequisite:  Admission to the Ultrasound Technology program.  Corequisite:  AHUS 107.  (Su)

Instructs students in the hands-on scanning of patients via ultrasonography at clinical sites.  Students will obtain hands-on clinical experience performing ultrasound examinations under the direct supervision of the clinical instructor or certified ultrasonographer.
