Randall Gloege, David Karnos and Walt Utroske retired in August 2006. Each professor will continue to teach three classes a year for the next three years.
Melodee Mattson from Billings, who graduated summa cum laude from Montana State University Billings, was one of only 77 scholars selected to receive a full graduate scholarship this fall from the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, headquartered in Lansdowne, Va.
Mattson, who graduated from MSU Billings in December 2005 with a bachelor of arts degree in English and a minor in music, is attending the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, to pursue the master’s degree in literature. “In this video-game culture where children have lost the talent for play, a revival of the imagination is vitally important,” wrote Mattson in her scholarship application, adding that she would like to teach humanities. Also in her application, she cites her interests in the violin, singing, and teaching drama to young students.
Amy Stark A 2005 (MED) and 1999 (BA) English graduate, was accepted into the JET Program as an ALT and currently lives and works at junior high and elementary schools in Toyotomi, Hokkaido, Japan.
Michael Sarabia A 2004 English graduate, has been accepted to the University of Iowa College of Law and will start classes Fall 2005.
Amber Harris A 2003 graduate has been accepted into the Master's Program in English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and will be starting classes fall semester.
Sue Hart In February 2003, Professor Sue Hart received the Governor’s Humanity Award which was given to recognize achievement in humanities scholarship and service and in the enhancement of public understanding and appreciation of the humanities.
She also received the Educator’s Award from the Montana Historical Society in October 2002 for her contributions to Montana history.
Her newest book Yellowstone and Blue, The First 75 Years is now available. This book documents the first seventy-five years of Montana State University Billings.
Dr. Walter Gulick, Professor Emeritus retired in May 2002 but will remain on campus for several years participating in the Honors Program. He had been teaching Philosophy, Humanities, and Religious Studies at MSU Billings since 1974.
Updates from Former English Faculty and Students
Anne Arnold taught courses in advanced composition and American literature for twenty-seven years from 1957 until her retirement in l984. She passed away March 5, 1999.
Robert F. Gee joined the faculty in 1963 and taught a variety of courses ranging from basic expository writing and rhetoric to courses in English literature. He retired in 1984 but continued to visit the campus regularly, actively supporting the university library until his death January 6, 2000.

James Healey joined the Department in 1975, and taught American Literature, Research Writing, Fiction into Film and Reading/Responding to Literature. Jim was a Fulbright Scholar in Czechoslovakia from 1988-1990 and spent 1995-96 on sabbatical in San Francisco. His special interests are music, film, Emily Dickinson, and popular culture. Jim retired effective Summer 1999, and has been nominated for Professor Emeritus.
Anna Elkins graduated in 1998 and has recently completed an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She has received a Fulbright to live in Karlsruhe, Germany, in the northern black Forest, and write a collection of ekpharastic poetry about the mixed-media art museum, the Center for Art and Media Technology.
Wade Watson a 1998 graduate is now the English Department Chair in Parker, AZ.
