English & Philosophy Scholarships
Six scholarship funds exist to benefit upper division English majors. Three are fully endowed at $10,000 and are awarded annual scholarships. The Lyle Cooper Memorial Scholarship and the George H. Gloege Scholarship Fund were created in 1996.
Kathyrn A. Carpenter Scholarship for American Literature Endowment
At former president Dr. Bruce Carpenters retirement dinner in 1994, friends of Kathryn Carpenter established and funded this endowment in her name. John Nickey, received the 1995 award; Marla Wick, 1996; Erin Revill 1997; Erin Casey (Renvill), 1998; Cory Utterback, 1999; Darcy Moler, 2000; and Misti Titeca, 2001; Amber Harris, 2002; Marlane Johnson, 2003; Cassidy Gamsby, 2004.
Bruce Meyers Memorial English Scholarship
Originally established as the English Endowed Scholarship in 1984, this fund, which provides one or more $500 scholarships, was renamed for faculty member Bruce Meyers in 1992 after his untimely death from a heart attack. The first scholarship was awarded to Nancy Widdicombe in 1992. Subsequent awards went to Carole Meier, 1993; Alice Nation, 1994; April Walker, 1995; Jenny Tschetter, April Walker and Cory Utterback, 1996; Anna Elkins and Ken Siebert, 1997; Stacy Fossum, and Cory Utterback, 1998; Kathleen Hardy Squires, 1999; Melissa Iverson, Kelly Petersen and Anna Robertus, 2000; and Amber Harris, Marlane Johnson and Lorie Spriggs, 2001; and Tanya Doke, Tichelle Ickes, and Marlane Johnson, 2002; Tichelle Ickes, Tammy Lehman and Marlane Johnson, 2003; Tammy Lehman, Melodee Mattson and Jessica Wade, 2004.
Pauline H. Rich Memorial Scholarship
Established with a contribution by Herbert and Mary Susan Rich Bush and a matching contribution by Texaco, Inc. this scholarship honors Pauline H. Rich, original faculty member and school librarian at Eastern Montana College from 1937 until 1956. The $1,000 generated by this endowment will be awarded to a student majoring in English, with preference given to an interest in library science or literary arts. The first scholarship was awarded to Cody Weber. Cheryl Beaty was the recipient in 1997; Jennifer Evans in 1998 and Kimberely Shroyer, 1999; Amber Harris, 2000 and Kelly Peterson, 2001; and Connor Warner, 2002; Maxine Morgan, 2003; Amber Steiger, 2004.
Sigma Tau Delta Textbook Scholarship
Sigma Tau Delta offers two $150-$200 textbook scholarships a year from funds raised primarily at the Writers Roundup held each year in December. Lyle Cooper Memorial Scholarship in English
When E. Lyle Cooper passed away in December 1994, his daughter Joanne Cooper Morrill and many other friends donated funds to establish a scholarship in his memory. He taught English at Eastern Montana College from 1947 till his retirement in 1972 as Professor Emeritus. During that time he served as head of the English Department for a time and was the first chairman of the Division of Languages and Literature. Louis Bartlett is the recipient for 2001; Jeanette Bauer, 2001; Marlane Johnson, 2003; Amber Steiger, 2004.
George H. Gloege Scholarship Fund
Established by the Gloege family in 1996, this scholarship honors long-time professor of physical sciences at EMC/MSU Billings, George H. Gloege. It is jointly administered by the English/Philosophy Department and the Department of Physical Sciences. It was established to fund education for students actively interested in protecting the environment. This scholarship welcomes contributions.
