Seasiders Sweep Yellowjackets

LAIE, Hawaii – Brigham Young University-Hawaii used a hot start in sets one and two to sweep visiting Montana State Billings 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-16) Thursday evening in a non-conference match. The Yellowjackets fell to 0-5 on the year, while BYU Hawaii improved to 2-3.
The Seasiders hit over .400 in the first two sets and had just two errors in those sets combined. MSUB hit its best in set two with a team-high 14 kills and six errors for a .216 percentage. The Yellowjackets were led by a team-high eight kills from Jen Boe, while Jody Lutz had five kills. Brooke Tolman had 25 assists.
BYU Hawaii was led by 13 kills from Julia Becker and 10 from Losaline Faka’osi with 10. Every Seasider who had a kill hit over .200 as the team committed just seven errors for the match.
The Seasiders scored eight of the first 11 points in the first set and led 20-10 before a timeout from MSUB head coach Steve Smith. BYU Hawaii went on for the 25-11 win.
In the second set, the Yellowjackets showed some life as they hit over .200 and were tied at six before BYUH went on an 8-3 run and later built a 19-11 lead.
The third set saw MSUB hit its lowest of the match at .073 with just nine kills and six errors. Like in the first set, the Seasiders jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and never looked back for a 25-16 win.
MSUB returns to action Friday evening as it faces Hawaii Pacific at 7 p.m. Hawaii time in a rematch of a tough 3-2 loss last week to the Sea Warriors. The Jackets had a 2-0 lead in the first meeting, but couldn’t close the door.
The Yellowjackets then play a neutral site rematch contest with Hawaii Hilo Saturday morning at 11 a.m. and close the two-week trip to Hawaii with a match at Chaminade Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. Hawaii Hilo defeated MSUB 3-1 last week at Hilo.
MSUB then returns home to open the 2010 Great Northwest Athletic Conference slate, Thurs., Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., versus Northwest Nazarene in Alterowitz Gymnasium. |
