BILLINGS, Mont. – Two first half goals by Western Washington spoiled Montana State Billings’ Senior Day as the visiting Vikings posted a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field. With the loss, the Yellowjackets finished the season with a 9-10-1 overall record and a 5-7 record in the GNAC. WWU improved to 11-4-4 overall and 8-1-3 in league play.
“Today’s game was typical of how our season went,” head coach Don Trentham said. “Often times we were close to making something happen, but fell short. I thought we played good at times today, however had problems breaking down a good Western Washington defense.”
Prior to the game, the Yellowjackets honored both Caitlin Differding and Chelsea Libby in playing their final games for the Yellowjackets. Libby tied Sara Gress for the most games played in school history (78).
“Senior Day always is a sad day, but it was fun to watch Libby (Chelsea) and Diff (Caitlin Differding) one last time in a Yellowjacket uniform,” Trentham added. “The two of them have meant a lot to our program and I am excited to see their continued development as they move on from MSUB.”
The Vikings got off to a quick start as Molly Shannon recorded her seventh score of the year off an assist from Kasey Hostetler just 8:16 into the contest. Shannon took a pass through the defense from Hostetler into the box and fired from about 10 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
MSUB had a great look at the equalizer moments later as Libby had a shot inside the box but WWU goalkeeper, Kylie Broadbent, came up with the save. Samantha Sandau had a shot that sailed high a few minutes later as the Yellowjackets began to get some good offensive looks.
Hostetler scored the second goal giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead at the 25:43 mark off a throw in from the far corner into the box and the score off a Claire Morgan assist.
WWU led the game 2-0 at the half as it led 7-5 in shots and both teams each had a corner kick.
After the half, the Yellowjackets really got in a groove offensively and clamped down on defense as they outshot the Vikings 6-1 in the second half and held the Vikings without a shot on goal in the second stanza.
In the final minute, Kari Foreman scored off a throw in at the top of the box off two assists from Samantha Boehm and Jennifer Larsen for a 2-1 score. It was Boehm’s first assist since her freshman year. It was Larsen’s third assist on the year and Foreman’s ninth goal.
For the game, the Yellowjackets were led by four shots and two on goal from Jaucelyn Richter, while Hostetler led the Vikings with one shot on goal a score and an assist. MSUB held an 11-8 lead in shots. Both teams had five shots on goal for the game.
“There were many positives on the year, Trentham said.” I look forward to the 2010 season already as we will return most of our team.”
