BILLINGS, Mont. – The Saint Martin’s women’s soccer team defeated host Montana State Billings Thursday afternoon, 3-0 at Yellowjacket Field. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fell to 8-8-1 overall and 4-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. SMU improved to 10-7 and 6-4 in conference play.
“I was very disappointed in the energy we showed today,” MSUB head coach Don Trentham said. “When it comes to conference games at the end of the season, you need players to step up and have big time performances and the players we asked to step up today didn’t.”
SMU opened the scoring late in the first half as Julianna Sackeyfio scored off a Jill Webb corner kick for the game winner and first goal of the game. The game remained 1-0 at halftime as SMU controlled much of the half and held an 8-3 lead in shots.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Webb scored her first of two second half scores at the 48:47 mark with an unassisted goal and then hooked up with Sackeyfio in the 78th minute for her second score on a long breakaway.
MSUB increased its shot count in the second half, firing seven in the half and 10 for the game. MSUB had five shots on goal, while SMU tallied 10 shots on target. MSUB goalkeeper, Jordan Fenwick, tallied seven saves for the game, while her counterpart, Ashley Engel, had five saves in the shutout win.
Freshman Jaucelyn Richter led the Yellowjackets with six shots and four on goal in the losing effort. Webb paced the Saints with five shots, three on goal, two scores and one assist. Sackeyfio had three shots on goal with one goal and one assist.
The Saints handed the Yellowjackets their fourth consecutive defeat and third consecutive shutout as MSUB hasn’t scored since a 2-1 loss to Carroll College Oct. 16. MSUB hasn’t scored in a season-long 277:32 minutes.
“We find ourselves in a difficult situation at the moment, and we have to fight to get out of it,” Trentham added.
The Yellowjackets have a quick turnaround as they host Western Oregon on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Yellowjacket Field in the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
