Yellowjackets Fall at Western Washington, 3-0
Box Score
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Three first half goals by Western Washington proved to be too much for the Montana State Billings women’s soccer team Saturday night. With the loss, MSUB fell to 8-7-1 overall and 4-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. WWU improved to 10-4-2 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play.
“We didn’t come out tonight with the energy we needed in order to beat a good Western Washington team,” head coach Don Trentham said. “We have to put this trip behind us quickly and get ready for two good conference games next week against Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon.”
WWU opened the scoring just eight minutes into the contest as Kelly Irving scored off a set piece from 24 yards out. The Vikings scored two more goals late in the half as Justina MacDowell scored off a Lucy Miller assist on a low cross and a sliding finish at the goal for a 2-0 lead at the 41:29 mark.
Just over two minutes later, Joana Houplin scored her first goal of the year with a double assist from Claire Morgan and Kasey Hostetler for a 3-0 score heading into half.
MSUB freshman Jaucelyn Richter had six shots and three on goal for the Yellowjackets, while fellow freshman Jennifer Larsen had three shots and two on goal. MSUB had 12 shots for the game and five on goal.
Yellowjacket goalkeeper, Jordan Fenwick, made four saves in the game, while WWU goalkeeper, Kylie Braodbent, tallied five saves in the shutout.
The Yellowjackets return home for the final four home games of the regular season. MSUB kicks off the home stand Thurs., Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. versus Saint Martin’s in a doubleheader with the men’s team. MSUB then hosts Western Oregon on Sat., Oct. 31 at 12:30 p.m. at Yellowjacket Field.
